BMW genuine privacy glass

Is this possible to retrofit and if so what do we think the cost would be?

I'd say that's a BMW customer services/dealer question. Likely way more expensive than a tint, that's if its possible.

Surely the 'privacy glass' is just tint anyway? It would be prohibitively expensive to retrofit.

For a Z4MC...

#4 side rear 'sun protection' glass is £128 a side - plus fitting.

Rear hatch 'sun protection' glass is not listed as such - and #8 is just a trim piece of 2.3m length.

Similar diagrams are available for most BMW models.

The factory-tinted glass is different to an aftermarket tint as the factory tint appears to be part of the glass itself whereas the aftermarket tints are films that can be removed.

Of course it's possible to retrofit the factory-tinted glass, the process is exactly the same as replacing a window or rear screen that has been broken - the cost of doing so is another matter...

I presume that this is for your new 335, so in a 4-door saloon you'd be looking at both rear windows, both rear quarterlights and a rear windscreen - If I were you, I'd contact someone like Autoglass and ask for a quote as it's likely to be cheaper than BMW

Cheers all and good call Perry.
For the Zed thats not as expensive as I'd imagined either.

The rear side windows are quite easy to do. A few years back someone on e90post bought some from a breakers and fitted them themselves. The rear quarters and rear screen are a bit more difficult.

I had my e90 tinted using film. I'm very critical and i felt the results were more than satisfactory. unlike the e92 the e90 is actually quite easy to do because none of the windows have a massively graduated dot matrix area (e92 rear screen is a bitch for this).

From what i know of windscreen i think you will be looking at upwards of £600 to get somewhere like auto glass to fit factory tinted stuff. Film from a reputable company like Pentagon will be closer to £200 I would think.

Some very rare pics of my e90. I went for very subtle tints and also got the fronts done in a very very light tint as I hate the van look. It's not fully legal but i never ever got bother off the Police. The guy that did the tints told me they only ever bother boys in Corsas and Drug dealers in RRSs.

This one shows how subtle the tints actually were

In contrast i went a bit too dark on my A3. We learn from our mistakes.

Looks great Mowflow. Could you tell me what percentage you went for on each glass? Thats exactly how I'd like mine. Also any contact details on the tinting company.

I added 35% on the back and 50% on the front which makes the back more or less the same as the OE glass which is 40%. The standard, non sun protection e90 windows are at the legal limit (for fronts) as is. Because of this some places will refuse to do them. Not doing the fronts will make it look more OE anyway. The first pic I posted is a more realistic idea of what mine looked like.

I used a local guy to me, in Glasgow so no use for you. Plenty of places doing tinting now and forums like e90post, piston heads and detailing world will all give first hand reviews of people's work. There's also the national companies like Pentagon which is franchised but all have high standards if slightly higher prices.

FYI - Pentagon in Enfield just quoted me £225+vat for two rear passenger and rear screen in smoked plus two front doors in light smoked. 2-3 hours work.
