BMW DIS woes (no voltage on pin 15 error)

Since having my laptop nicked and buying a new replacement, I'm trying to get all the BMW diag and coding tools set up on it.

I've got INPA and NCSExpert up and running fine.
I've also got SSS and DIS (v52) vm machines up and running.

However, DIS refuses to communicate with the car - it keeps complaining that there is no voltage detected on pin 15 ?

I'm running Windows 7 64bit, and have installed the additional stuff to get EDIABAS up and running on it

I start up BMW Diagnostic Head v1.2, as well as ifhsrv32.exe (C:\ediabas\bin\ifhsrv32.exe)
When I fire up the DIS vm machine, it allows me to correctly connect to the diagnostic head, and the signal strength at the top right of DIS shows full bars of connection.

yet, whenever I go to diagnose and select the e85, I get this error message:

anyone got any advice?
 
I had this problem when I first started using DIS and it was simply because I wasn't using the black adapter that came with the cable. Maybe that's why?

I have that exact cable (although different colour) and it came with this black adapter that goes over the end. Until I used that I was getting the same error as you. Btw I bought mine from cable-shack

odd.. I've not seen the adapter before.

quite possibly.
I had two, but the fuzz have commandeered the other one for now as I obviously left it in the boot and it's a suspicious package or something... :x
 
OH MAN. I have been trying to figure out what exactly all this stuff is. So what is so special about the black connector? Is there a place i can get it in the US?

How can i get the INPA software and setup?

I really have no idea about the black connector... I've bought a second cable now, that CAME with the DIS software, and that's not got a black connector.
Once it arrives, I'll give that ago and see.


INPA is fairly straightforward to get up and running - quick google will help you find it and instructions... (hint: bimmerforums)

I think your issue is similar to this and as posted above, you need to use the adapter which bridges certain pins on the OBDII adapter to work on the older BMW'S of which the E85 is one as the architecture is mostly E46.
 
It just doesn't make sense tho - I was perfectly able to use the same cable I am now, to use INPA / NCS Expert on my old laptop... and I'm definately able to use INPA on my new one - it's just DIS that's moaning?

Are you sure you were able to access all vehicle modules or only the DME?

pretty sure I was able to access everything.
I've just finished re-rebuilding my laptop, so I'll test it again shortly and take a few screenshots if it works (plus take a pic of the cable used).
 
right.. one cable (with the right drivers) works fine with INPA - will read the info from all the modules.
The other cable will not (just reads the DME).

Seems there are, at least, TWO versions of the EDIABAS cable out there - one that needs the magic black box, and one that certainly does not.

(Knew I wasn't imagining it!)
 
just to confirm.. my cable, without that magic black box.. works fine across all modules in INPA :)
