BMW/Boeing. Cheaper carbon fibre products to come?

Interesting article. I get the impression that behind the scenes there is an almighty scramble going on among car manufacturers to find cheaper ways of making carbon fibre. I've seen stuff on Mclaren, Ferrari etc trying to do the same.

I think carbon fibre (or related products) will be the next big emissions reduction tool.

Aside from materials costs, I wonder what the cost of production and carbon emissions really are. Carbon fibre probably easier to lay out, but needs baking and numerous nasty chemicals. Sheet metal can be laser cut to tremendous accuracy, it's quickly pressed and offcuts from the original sheet easily recycled

Any production engineers able to comment?
