BMW are clearly mad - I like it

LOL. How's that for a big middle finger up to the eco warriors. Fine we'll stick to diesels, 6 cylinders and under. But don't expect us to be sensible about it

Actually this is exactly what the eco warriors want.
A really efficient turbo only works good with a very narrow rpm band.
Turbo's on car arent efficient at all compared to say industrial turbo engines because they have to work in a very wide rpm range.
By dividing the rpm range up over multiple turbo's you get a more efficient engine.
And that is exactly what bmw is doing.
By making your engine more efficient you burn less fuel per set output so you can get more HP out of it.

Plus the extra, smaller turbo means it's easier to massage the emissions tests to get a low CO2 figure and high MPG figure for a 400bhp car!

This sounds an epic car to me, ticks every box.

I wonder if quad turbos will make it onto the petrol engined cars.

If theyre going to take more drugs, hopefully someone will wonder what will happen if they mate two engines together, an octo-turbo v12 deisel, if they could include cylinder shutoff for emissions testing that would also be cool :)

That is some inlet manifold plumbing!
