BMW approved oil

just a note to others on the correct engine oil to use - dealer advised 0W30, 5W30 or 0W40, full sythetic - BMW recommend castrol.

apparently this is standard across the BMW range for the last 5 or so years, so even petrol or diesel is irrelevant (very surprised!) - begs the question of why they dont just write it in the manual and instead tell you to call up the dealer!

I got elf excellium 0W30 - 25 euros a litre (!) which puts it more expensive than chateauneuf-du-pape! however, it probably doesnt taste so good with mature cheese

I bought a large can of Castrol Edge 0W-30, seemed to meet the LL01 standard 8)

Not sure if its going to use any oil yet, I hear some of the 3.0's can consume a bit of oil :?

Mine was fairly thirsty, so keep an eye out for the warning light.

I don't do many miles and check it at the weekends, hasn't used a drop yet thus far - touches wood :)

God knows how the later cars with the electronic oil gauge work! You can't go wrong with a mechanical dipstick and I assume you are less prone to overfilling! 8)

This is one car I won't be playing with under the bonnet

I've got an '03 3.0 and it got through 1 litre in about 10,000 miles. It will let you know when it the oil gets low - a yellow oil light and a loud beep when you turn the engine off.
I got 1 litre of Castrol Edge from Halfords for £14 (!)

Why couldn't it just have a good ol fashion oil stick to check your oil level instead of a button?
Luddite! Technology for technology's sake keeps capitalism on track and defeats terrorism.

I guess it's to stop all us busy exec's from having to open the bonnet* and get our hands oily.
:)

* = "hood" or "big flappy sheet that keeps rain off the engine"
