BMS DCI review for 35i

In the quest to gradually modify my 35i with a few choice parts I installed a Burger Motorsport dual cone intake system on the car this afternoon.

Feedback is mixed, some claim it suffers from heat soak, others say it's a great mod on mapped vehicle (mine is remapped).

Installation was incredibly simple, 10 minute job and easier than a 335i due to more space - anyone could do it. The intakes are very well made, come with nicely finished aluminium tubes and are already oiled with S&B red oil (hence the colour).

Performance? Well it certainly has more in take noise with a more pronounced woosh as you accelerate. Personal taste but I enjoy the sound and is the main reason for the purchase. The car really feels the same, perhaps marginally sharper response with turbos feeling to spool a fraction quicker. Ground breaking? Absolutely not but they look fantastic, add a little more drama to the noise and for £120 delivered it's a very cheap modification. Photo below was taken before reinstalling the air snorkel.

I'll see how it goes over the next week and give a better review.

An interesting looking mod. I'd be worried about it pulling in more hot air than the stock front mounted intake. Without side by side testing in different types of driving it's probably not going to be that easy to spot.

Heat soak is definitely a concern. BMS went to some lengths to publish an article about intake air temperature and are adamant that this setup does not suffer. The jury is out, I'm sure it will suck in hotter air but as you say how much is it noticed?

Just went out for a "proper" run now the roads have quietened down. Sound is great, had me smiling! Car feels more eager to rev out and just in general feels a little freer. BMS claim 15bhp but I'd be impressed if it gave any kind of gains at all - bit of response and sound is all I wanted and I would say it has delivered. Would recommend (so far).

I've not noticed any detriment to performance in mine using the butt dyno , I thought they would be a lot louder than stock but they really arent , Whether its because we sit so far back from the engine I don't know

I really wanted the AFE unit but couldn't justify the cost , I believe fitting scuttle filters massively increases volume to the engine bay , although with our climate it may not be suited for UK cars
