Bluetooth Woes

A few months ago, I helped my son instal a Brodit charging holder for an iphone in the fold down console cover of his '04 3 litre.
Because of the width of the phone, the only way we could get it to fit was to rip out all the existing phone related gubbins in the cover including the phone adaptor, its holder (the "eject box" I think its called) and associated wiring. After a day or so's faffing about we got it all installed and working and he went on his way a happy bunny.
He recently decided to upgrade to the new iphone which fortunately fits the existing holder and looked to be an easy swap.
However, when he came to pair his new phone with the car system, he realised that we had dropped a major clanger...
The Bluetooth pairing button is on the eject box - and I'd binned that months ago. :(
I've been mulling over the options and wondered if anyone can offer further advice?
1 Is there any other way to get the phone system into "pairing" mode other than the eject box button?
2 Is the button just a "momentary" switch and if so can anyone tell me which two wires in the bluetooth loom I need to connect? (Should be simple enough to bodge up a push switch to do the job).
3 A source for a secondhand box and loom?
All help gratefully received!
Russ

not sure about the pairing but surely scrap yard will have one or two z's owned by some of our more over zealoused owners? could get new (old) ejector box there.

Not sure if this will help but anyone who installed a 3G/3GS iPhone snap in will have had to purchase the new eject box which is wider than the original factory fitted one to take the wider 3G
snap in ,I sold mine on Forum some months ago but anyone who has gone this route with an 07 to/09 will have probably had to replace it

Russ,

The pairing button is indeed a momentary 'on' switch and in my retrofit I installed it in the loom without the need for the pulldown flap gubbins.

Trouble is I have no idea what you've ripped out so it's impossible to tell you which wires or indeed if they'd work.

I woudldget a secondhand loom for whatever you pulled out. check where the momentary pair button connects in and replicate that with a simple momentatry on switch.

Best place is to then hide it under the little coin box behind the handbrake.

Altenative is to contact bimmernav (who can supply all sorts of bluetooth loom and buttosn to make it work)

You can use the phone button on multi function steering wheel to pair the phone... i have never used the button on my center console thing.

Interesting as that does different things on mine. Maybe as I retrofitted.

To pair i put my ignition key in poistion 1, hold the button for 3 seconds then the screen comes up with pairing.

If i waiting too long to press the button/ or press and hold it while driving then the car does its voice commands thing.

If i press it once lightly then i think it redials my last person (but not sure if thats the last person from my phone, or last person i called from within my car)

What does this button do on yours?

Actually it probably does what you describe but given each time I touch it I either dial someone or get voice commands I leave it alone.

If you have no joy let me know and I can photograpth the loom and the switch CJ talks about. I have a retrofit kit that cam from the states and has a pairing button that plugs into the loom instead of using the cradle.

It maybe that the button is there for those who don't have a MFSW

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions.
Unfortunately, he doesn't havethe MF steering wheel so that option is a non starter.
I think we'll investigate what remains of the loom and see if its possible to identify which wires lead to the pairing switch.
Does anyone have a wiring diagram showing the wire colours?

Did you not read my post above :poke:

I have a loom in a box with a switch so can easily take a picture.

Just drop me a PM with your email address.

Hi SRHutch,

"Did you not read my post above

I DID read your post and thanks for your kind offer.

However, I can't see how a picture of your adaptor lead and button is going to help me identify the two wires I need in the existing loom.
IIRC the main loom from the Bluetooth box comes into the fold down flap at the hinge end and then splits into two.
One part has power for phone charging etc and this terminates at the hinge end. I remember cutting off this plug and tapping into the loom to connect the Brodit power supply.
The other runs up the length of the flap and plugs in to the pairing button at the latch end.
I'm pretty sure I hacked off this part by the hinge so without the plug I wouldn't be able to identify what went where. If I did leave the plug attached then it might be possible to identify which are the correct wires by looking at your adaptor lead terminals.
Either way, if I can find out which colour wires I am looking for then it would be a simple job to add a switch.
I've asked my son to have look at the wiring (I'm in Norwich and he's in Leeds) and let me know whats been left.
If by some lucky chance I have left the plug in situ , then I'll take you up on your offer.

Have a look at this link: WDS BMW Wiring Diagram System

You may need to install the adobe software (detailed at the bottom). But if you search for bluetooth it brings up a few results - haven't looked at it thoroughly, but it will tell you which colour wire is carrying which signal and, if you need to trace it back, the pin allocation.

Likely to be slow going, but may help.

Thanks for the link PawnS.
I managed to get it working and found the diagram that I needed.
Unfortunately, although it gives the wire colours, it doesn't indicate exactly what they connect to - just shows them going into the eject box.
I guess that if BMW Techs found a damaged loom they'd just replace it so wouldn't need to know where each wire goes...

I have a resler iBUS USB interface, one of the options is to kick the car into bluetooth pairing mode, pretty simple to hook up and all the info available with a quick google search.

you can also enable voice control if this option was not paid for with bluetooth, a very simple process.
