Blue tooth phone pairing

Anyone know how to get my 2004 to pair with my LG Android phone? Does it really have to be on the 'approved phones' list? I mean isn't that the whole point of a bluetooth standard? I've read about/tried several things... including trying during the first 2 minutes of the car being on... holding down various buttons.. no indication that it's entering a pairing state... I've tried looking from my phone too... not seeing anything. I have the 'code' in hand... but I don't imagine that's going to do anything for me until the car sees my phone or vice versa. Any ideas?

Thanks.

You just have to be persistent. I just got a new phone and took me a while before I got it paired. Hold down the pairing button for 5 seconds, then turn ignition on (but not starting engine). Start a search in your phone and it should show up. I had to repeat this half a dozen times on two seperate attempts (stopped the first time to research that I was doing it right!)

As far as standards go, Bluetooth is a crap one. We coded a Bluetooth module for some PAG cars and the standard has some holes in it. To fill those holes, each phone manufacturer does different things. For example, some will pair and then keep the connection, while others will pair then drop the connection, then attempt to make it again. As a result we'd have a system that worked with one phone, but wouldn't with another. You'd have to test each version with half a dozen handsets covering a few manufacturers to have any confidence it would work.

You don't need your phone to be on the approved phones list, it just means BMW have tested that phone with the system and know it works.

Thanks. I wasn't even aware of the button in the storage compartment (actually haven't checked for it yet). My instructions seem to revolve about a video display which I do not have. Is it possible I could have the phone function buttons (which seem to make the radio display change when I press them)... and NOT bluetooth capabilities? (anxious to get home and check now). It did come with a code on a card. My instructions refer to a 'BMW phone'... is it possible what I have only supports something a phone from BMW? I guess I should stop asking more questions until I check for that bluetooth button later.

Thanks again!

Ok, I couldn't wait... had my wife go check the storage compartment door... she said there was no button INSIDE that she could find, however, there's the phone button just in front of the storage compartment (there's an 'SOS' button next to it). Is this the button that should be pressed to initiate pairing ? Or maybe not finding a button in the storage compartment means I don't have the capability?

With ignition off hold down the phone button in the middle cubby hole door for 3 seconds, still holding turn the ignition to position 1 and then release the button after another 3 seconds. It should go into pairing mode, you will need the 4 digit pin code supplied with the car and to have your phone searching for devices and discoverable.
