New to all this in Z land so forgive the naïvety of a Z newby

I’ve a generic code reader off Amazon that I’ve used with Autodoc and a carista evo that I used with my golf GT. Will the carista work with my e89 Z or must I get bimmercode and bimmerlink. And will I then need a new obd dongle?

I want to make the mirrors fold with the door locking and understand this has to be done with one of the above.

Thanks

No No Maybe

Other coding / diagnostic apps are available

BimmerCode / bimmerlink are an option…but not the best if coding / diagnostics / programming are down stream needs

If you have an Android phone or tablet, Bimmergeeks ProTool might be a better choice. If you have a convertible top fault, you can't open the boot from your remote or the boot release. Protool will allow you to override and open the boot. Otherwise you will have to crawl under the glove box and short some wires.

As was mentioned by Javis, ProTools is the better option, but you'll pay twice as much for both coding and fault checking.
I emailed Bimmer Link to ask if they supported real-time ride-level sensor information when I was diagnosing a headlight issue. They replied promptly, and let me know that they did not support this. ProTool was recommended, and it does in fact support this.

So in my experience, ProTool was the better option. The price is steep, but it's more "full suite" than many others.

I will say that folding the mirrors with coding on a Z4 may be a weird request. BimmerCode (download the demo version) says it can't be done on convertible models. I know that getting additional 3rd party hardware like SMartTOP will enable the feature you're asking for.

I haven't gone deep enough to know if ProTool will allow mirror folding with door locking. It may, or it may not. Maybe someone else will chime in with direct experience in this specific desire you have.

ProTool does allow mirror folding when locking. You can also code convertible top down with remote in American cars. I've coded both top down and mirror folding in my 2011 Z4 USA.

This was the coding I did using BimmerCode in expert mode to get fold on lock mirrors.

You can also choose the delay so if one click they stay out. Hold click they fold. Great if it’s frozen to prevent damage to the motor mechanism.

Maybe the best tool to buy is the MHD universal Wi-Fi adapter. It works with Protool, Bimmercode, MHD, xHP... and you will likely never need another adapter for your BMW e89 again because it is the most supported. I personally have Protool and Bimmercode. I'm considering adding xHP to the mix.
