Bike Rack

Apart from being a keen Zed'er (2010 3.0 auto) I am a keen cyclist. Has anyone any experience of fitting the BMW bike rack?
I am thinking of just getting the tow bar part fitted with a swan neck onto which I will attach my own bike carrier. That won't need electrics as it will take the bike high enough to avoid the lights. Any thoughts, please

Use the search function. Plenty of topics regarding the pros and cons of fitting/carrying bikes on the E89.

As said, lots of threads on the subject via the search box.

Other than that though many people on here (me included) have used the Saris Bones on a coupe without issue. Before that I used a Saris Guardian on my roadster so depending on what flavour Zed you have there are options.

Tow bar - although effective, wont give you the sporty prowess look a Zed commands of course.

The key here, is the e89 is a moving hard top. Nothing should be attached to this as it is not designed to take the strain of other than itself.

More than that, about a grand and half I think. Its Frustrating that none of the normal racks are ok to use on the z4, based on the posts on here a reasonable price bike rack would sell a lot.

There was a post on here about a month ago with an alternative version of tow rack for about £500

Isn't the BMW bike rack crazily priced? over a grand?

Tim.

i assume you get a bike too though

I priced the BMW bike rack about a month ago and not including fitting it came out at around £1500 - couldnt believe it. From memory there is a solution from the states at around £400 but it required 2 pipes to be left in situ visible under the rear bumper. I like cycling but not enough to ruin the gorgeous aesthetics of the Z4.

I think the post was early feb this year

Found the link to the Bike rack in the states

Not sure about the two black pipes sticking out the bottom of the car when the racks not on it. There not in your face but they are also not invisible.

The bmw one at least looks invisible when not fitted, as far as I can tell that is.

I'm waiting to see a quote from dealer on the rack fitted, but the price for the bmw one is on the web site. You'll need one of these from £312 plus paint and fitting http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owners/accessories/accessoryDetail.accessoryId=8754.html then the rack itself from £549 plus paint and fitting http://www.bmw.co.uk/en/topics/owners/accessories/accessoryDetail.accessoryId=8748.html

So looks like it'll come in over grand fitted. Which is bit steep for me so I doubt I'll go with it. Instead I'll get a rack for the wife's car in case I need to transport bikes. I did see a good custom one fitted on a us vehicle might try and find that link....
