Bike rack

Hello All

My new z4 is ready on Friday (250 mile journey upto Chester to pick it up !!), I am a keen mountain biker and would like to have a bike rack fitted on the z4. I would rather have something more stable like a towbar version than risk damaging my paintwork with the normal type. BMW do a nice looking rack but it looks like it would cost about a grand anymore options out there worth looking at ?

Thanks I did see that thread but really don't like the idea of that kind of bike rack ( I can imagine dropping the bike on the back of the car).

Toby is this an e85 or e89? The reason I ask is because you shouldn't fit anything to the e89 other than the BMW kit... reason being that most of them attach to the roof mechanism in some way, and this can be damaged as its not designed to take any fittings let alone the weight of bikes at 60mph. Its a bit different on the e85/86 as their boot is fixed and not floating like that on the e89...
 
Yep it's an e89, so looking for something like the BMW that attachtithes underneath rather than the roof but don't want to spend a grand

The BMW one is hugely expensive (circa £1500 last I checked) and when I enquired about it, despite it being on the BMW website, it was not authorised for UK sale. This was about 8 months ago. The other point to note is that it does seem to leave a tiny bit exposed at the bottom. At £50 to hire a car for a day, I can hire a lot of cars so I decided to leave it and the money in my bank (especially as I was a bit worried about what might be left showing when not in place).
