There are threads relating to standard coupes and roadsters, but has anybody here every managed to firt a deconstructed MTB in the bqck of an ///M before? Am guessing the battery box isnt that helpful to the cause.

Yes, someone has definitely done this. If you nip over to PistonHeads, and search for username 'custardkid', you'll see that he has done it (Silver Z4MC).

Doesn't look like the easiest of fits though, so you'll need to be careful where you place it, and also make sure you protect everything properly (both car and bike).

I had to go back to Custard Kid's instructions to get it in, but it does work. Forks go in the battery side, handlebars face forwards and wheels fit behind the bike.

Loads of times, eveneasier if it's a FS bike as you cav remove the suspension pivot bolt. Easy to damage your rear mech though, so be careful.

Okay, just tried fitting it in the back and no joy. Even with both wheels out and handlebars off by Fox 150mm's and 20" frame were not even close to getting in. Reconstructed bike and have gone for my Saris bike rack option instead.

It's not pretty but its on and have attached the top two straps not to the top of the glass shutlines but the top edge sections where the boot lid changes direction. Seems stable enough but today's journey to Radlett for meeting then trip over to Suffolk will no doubt have me driving like Miss Daisy is sat in the passenger seat.

Pics to come...

I'd make Miss Daisy get out and ride the bike to Suffolk, then you can drive exactly how you like and have some fun :D

I have a Specialized Epic (FS, size large) there is no way that would go in my (normal) Coupe even removing the forks altogether. Removing pivots in the rear sus is fiddly (and you can't put them back together unless completely clean) + you really don't want to be moving the bike in that state or you'll end up damaging the cables.
I can just about get my road bike in though, albeit removing wheels + handlebars.

Yeah, there was no way it was going in and I wasn't about to p*ss about with fork removals etc, so the Saris external had to go on. Was okay using this weekend. Not confident with it though and the weight of the bike shifted it's angle on the hanging bars a few times en route. It worked, it just didn't feel right being on there so I doubt I'll repeat the performance. Plan B of buying a cheap hack suddenly just went from amber to green light.

Anyway, below are some pics of the rack on the back. And if anybody likes this kind of thing, during our hack in Tunstall Forest my mate decided to remove part of his front teeth using the top yolk of his forks...
