Big Holiday Trip Ideas? Usa+Canada

Hi Guys

Just after some advice/views/experience

It was my 30th this year and the wife treated me to a lovely trip to the west coast so we did San Fran and drove the pacific highway stopped off at all the best places on route went all the way to San Deigo and finished up in LA had an epic trip all round. So the pressure is on as its her 30th in April next year so I need to pull my finger out and get something arrange which will be awesome!

I went to the agents and we came up with this trip ...

Fly to Montreal - Spend 2 nights

Drive to Toronto - Spend 3 nights

Go to Niagra Falls stay over night on her birthday , back to Toronto the next day

Fly from Toronto to Washington and spend 2 nights there

then onto New York for 3 further nights and fly back to the UK

Reasons for the trip was she's never been to NY and always wanted to go to Canada so thought I could combined the two? We like to keep busy on our holidays but really open to suggestions , for some this might look like a bad business trip :lol: .... any suggestion and advice would be appreciated whether thats a different trip altogether, we will be travelling with a 2 year old. We took the little one with us when we went away for my trip and she travels well :thumbsup:

We are doing San Francisco LA and Vegas and the Pacific highway any suggestions on what to stop and see would be great :thumbsup:

Loved Toronto can tower was great. And obviously Niagara Falls is not that far :thumbsup:
 
Love the sound of that trip, something I would like to do. We did West Coast last year for hubbys 50th but included Vegas and Yosemite finishing in LA missing out San Diego, had a great time. Looking at tweaking it for my birthday next year or doing a loop of Yellowstone or further out and doing Hawaii. I guess both of those might be trickier with a tot though. I'm on another holiday forum that has some great trip reports and answers loads of questions, not sure if I can post a link but if it is allowed then I will post?
 
If your planing on going to Canada you really want to British Columbia, Banff, Vancouver etc. I did a tour from east to west and defiantly preferred the west side :)
 
Paz - Niagara is spectacular, did it about 20 years ago. One day/night is about right. Done New York a few times, never get tired of it. Just don't stray north of Central Park! Easy to get around NY, good cabs and subway, a lot of things are within walking distance.

Monkey - west coast is great driven up and down the coast high way a few times. Monterey and north is best for me, I wouldn't care if I never saw LA again personally, concrete jungle. Yosemite and Lake Tahoe are well worth a visit.
 
MM try and use Hertz at LAX they have the widest choice of all types of cars....whatever you book, you can change your car there and it's cheaper.

Be mindful, the drive to SF is a long one from either Vegas or LA, and I would say forget about the Grand Canyon and do Yosemite instead.....and if you have time, do north of SF and try and hit Tahoe....

How can you possibly forget about the Grand Canyon. Easily the most impressive views in the US.
 
I personally think Yosemite is better than the GC.....don't think you'd have enough time to do both....
 
Take in Hearst Castle (opulence at its finest) and stop off at Carmel (very quaint). If you go to LA try and get out of the centre and head out to the suburbs e.g. Studio City and around the Mulholland Drive area...fantastic views. Venice Beach is a strange combination of all sorts and Santa Monica is great. If you like theme parks go to Universal Studios.
 
About 5 years ago we flew to Vancouver and did Banff etc.Then a flight to Toronto and Niagara.we then took the train to New York ,and finally 6 nights on the Queen Mary to Southampton.A lovely trip.
 
Western Canada is beautiful, my lad and me hired a couple of motorbikes out of Vancouver in 2010 and rode out to ride the Icefields Parkway in Alberta. It would make a great road trip by car as well (may be doing that next summer with the missus). There are some good towns to stay at along the way with decent hotels. Banff is a nice place to stay for a couple of days.
