Bi-fold doors

Hi,

I'm replacing the entire windows & doors in our house with white UPVC as the current UPVC windows are cheap & nasty externally glazed ones in brown which just doesn't suit the house, originally the house would have come with white windows.

Whilst we are at it, we are looking to replace the current patio door with bi-folds, the width is only 1.8m & so a 2 sectional door is all that is required, I was just about to go with one of the 3 quotes I've had but I have a nagging doubt surrounding the bi-fold I've been quoted for which is in UPVC, several people now have suggested that aluminium (painted white in my case) is a better material for a bi-fold, stronger, lighter, easier to open & close & will potentially last longer.

Anyone have any experience for/against UPVC/aluminium bi-folds?

Any help appreciated.

We wanted French doors originally, but couldn't find any that folded right back & went flush against the outer walls.
 
I've got German made aluminum ones , just under 4 mtrs width , been in 6 years now and still perfect . They are more thermally stable than wood or plastic and don't colour fade like plastic .

Nice, makes my potential 1.8m ones look a bit weedy :)
 
We bought some bi-fold from a local window company (Dimple Glazing) in Southall. Its a 3 section door which folds flat to one side.
Security wise we are told they far exceed sliding doors (one of our neighbours had a burglary where they lifted out the sliding door to get in).
The white UPVC is sturdy, well sealed and keeps a lot of cold and sound out. The build quality is very good and we got a fantastic price on it.

I have wood bi-folds. Well, tri-fold i think is the name b&q used. I love them and everyone who comes in comments on them.

My dad went for aluminium in the end with his, mostly because the frame was narrower than it would've been if they were pvc. Cost him about 3k for 3 panels.
