Best tyres for performance?

I've got Continentals all round on my Z4MR. I must admit I'm a novice when it comes to tyres - is there a "best" option for this car or is it either/or between brands like Continental, Bridgestone, Michelin, etc? I'm just curious if you're already spending around £150/200 per tyre, is it worth spending that little bit extra for the premium model.. what are your experiences going from one brand to another?

Of 'normal' road tyres, Michelin PS2 seem to be the prefered option.

However if you want more dry grip at the expense of wet weather performance than Toyo R888s, Yokohama A0048R, Dunlop D03J, etc are brilliant on the track, and are road legal - although you're likely to get half the miles of of these 'sticky' tyres compared to the 'normal' tyres.

I'd go with the PS2's or the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric (although i dont think they are made in the factory sizes for the Z4?)

I'm always harping on about Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas. The are the premium tyre for me and winner of many a magazine's tests - just google for reviews and you'll see. What's more they're a decent price if you get them from www.camskill.com and get them fitted at your local blokey. Only PS2s compare IMHO and they are significantly more expensive.

I've had PS, PS2's, PE2's on the clio and imo there overrated!!

I want to try the Vredestein's! But really like the conti's on the car and the sport contact 3's on the clio 197.

I've got T1-R's on the V6 which are fine in the dry, hairy in the wet.

I know we go on and on about tyres, but in the end it's down to what a driver is comfortable with.

I like my tyres to give me a bit more progression than outright grip and so wouldn't use a Pilot Sport Cup, R888, A0048R, etc. on the road like other do and I know the damage these sticky tyres can do to normal cars on track (in the sense of extra wear and extended oil starvation).

I also understand that some people like their tyres to be all or nothing, and some prefer better wet grip at the expense of some dry grip, and some people prefer directional tyres to sided or asymetric ones.

I personally like asymetric Conti SportContact 2, 3 or Michelin Pilot Sport 2 - but they're just the tyres that I find suit my driving style.

Couldn't agree more.. except.. as we seem to be the only people that know about them, lets keep it quiet as stock is an issue ?

Driving on PS2 now and prefer them far above the CS3, nice alternative are the Goodyear and the Bridgestone (RE050A)

Well.. I just changed my drivers side rear continental 255 45R18 at a cost of £203 so back on the road :D However, when accellerating fast, I'm sure I can smell some tyre smell (or maybe its the engine..) it's not a bad smell.. it just smells like a scalextric car when you've been whizzing it round if you get my drift! Any thoughts - could this be the new one "bedding in"?

Also, does anyone know if these type of Continentals are "sticky" or good "all rounders" or what?

Can I double-check the size of tyre you've just put on the rear, as I thought standard rear was 255/40/18 not 255/45/18?

And which 'type' of Continentals are you asking about - they do quite a few - although non that I'd call 'sticky' :P

I was checking my tyre pressures yesterday, and my rears are definitely 255/45/R8's. Fronts are 225/45/R18.

My tyres were over inflated, some of them by as much as 6PSI, I should have checked them as soon as I bought it :o Went for a drive after and car felt much better over bumps!

Just checked, and the brochure lists rears as 255/40r18 and fronts as 225/45r18.

The 45 profile rear tyres will be about 3% bigger than the standard 40 profile tyres and probably make your speedo read correctly for a change - just make sure you take that into account when passing cameras :P

You do realise the rest of us are talking about Z4M's - in the ///M-specific forum :P
