best stubby aerial?

I intend to fit a dab with aerial to my car and wonder when you change to a stubby do you run any cables or just change the mast.

mmm will need to look into this as I have to change the whole thing and run the cables through must rise to the challenge for this one.
 
I fitted a stubby over the weekend, after liking the look in a number of photos around the forum. Wasn't as easy as I'd hoped to remove the original! It didn't budge when I twisted it by hand, or with grippers and an old cloth. Eventually, with a lot of brute force and plenty of swearing, it came off in one go. Hurrah, I thought :thumbsup:.

Then I realised the screw thing had sheared off in the aerial base :thumbsdown:.

I removed the aerial base (there's a torx screw that clamps it on in the boot), took it safely away from the car and drilled out the hole. Finally, 2 hours after beginning what I thought would be a 2 minute job, my new stubby is in place. :)

It looks great, but just to make people aware that straightforward jobs are not always as straightforward as you might hope...

Ouch! 2 hours!
Replaced mine in about 30 seconds the day before yesterday. :P

The thing is so tiny compared to the whip, I was expecting a noticeable drop in reception, but I'll be darned if the reception doesn't seem to have improved. Of course that could just be me and my wishful thinking. At the very least it hasn't gotten any worse. :thumbsup:
 
On this side of the pond, where distances from stations are likely to be greater, making a fashion statement with a shorter antennae is not a huge priority as it does tend to degrade signal strength. For myself, I spend a lot more time listening to DVDs.
 
I opted for the oem sporty antenna, looks great and has that rubber finish (previous aftermarket one I used which was metallic which experienced pitting and what not over time).
