Guys on the 1 series forum have been contacted so I'd guess it's the N47 cam chain issue.

I think it will be this also. Glad my 118d is a Company car. Although never found any definitive answer if mine is affected or not.

I have that engine. To be honest I'm really not fussed. Full manufacturers warranty so why care?

The only reason it's come up now is because there are so many clueless people that just assume a car with the BMW badge will be reliable and have bought 2nd or 3rd hand cars with no warranty only for them to blow up and a nice £2k bill to appear.

If you buy a car without doing the research and covering your arse "incase" then you deserve a slap for stupidity.

Every year they manage to extract more power out of the same cc. Am surprised the engine mortality rate isn't much higher... yet with these higher stresses we expect them to be even more reliable.

Think I'll stick with my M54 6 pot just that little bit longer...

The potential of engines is nowhere near what it could be. Just look at what motorbike manufacturers get out of a 1000cc engine in terms of power output. Then look at what car manufacturers get out of a twin blown 2l. There is a long way to go yet. Just look at the figures the 2l 4 pots in the new s3 or the a45 AMG are making compared to the power form the M54, with 50% higher cc. I dare say those engines will also remap incredibly well and will still be relatively reliable.

Not sure I agree with this, your average car buyer would not be thinking they need to research engine problems on a new car

Interesting debate ... Most punters expect technology and advancement to deliver better reliability, over the past 10 years in the diesel field the opposite has happened with DPF issues, DMF disasters and other stress handling problems.

Manufacturers appear to concentrate on short term technology that improves the 0 - 3 year old car driving experience and sod the car once it gets older.

About time that the "quality" Marques start to get brought to book as there should be accountability ....... Speaking as a p@ssed off Audi owner who had to swallow a £3700 bill for a replacement multitronic gearbox I have been bitten badly in the past!

Sadly inspite of the many hours an engine design is subjected to on the dyno its the customer that does the final development, by then of course its too late and engineering and warranty rush around like blue bummed flies putting the fires out.....in fact that applies to all car manufacturers and the whole car at times.

Not forgetting the aircraft industry
