Battery Replacement

So with BMW quoting me £330 to order and fit a new battery (£240 for the battery alone?!) I have been doing some searching round the forum for replacement batteries!

The following came up:

Bosch S6

Bosch S5

Any reason to go for the more expensive one really?

Also there have been mentions about the car needing coding changed to reset the charging pattern for the alternator? Any knowledge of this actually existing?

People say an s6 is overkill, but I personally would rather have an agm battery in my car (as the s6 has)

I've had the S5 in mines for the last 4 years and it hasn't missed a beat :D my car is a weekend only car so the battery does seem to be up to the job

Well if the Z4M copes with the S5 I think that answers the question :)

Now anybody know about this charging map thing I've seen mentioned

I just swapped mine over from the BMW branded one.

Idle voltage was a strong 14.4v without any map change. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Cheaper through ebay

You can get the S6 for about £125 from elsewhere.

Mine' still on the original BMW AGM battery, and it's 8 years old with 110k miles on it. Only thinking of replacing it as - despite 200+ mile runs twice a week - it's starting to take a couple of seconds to kick.

I fitted the S5 to mine 2 weeks ago and its been fine, Ive got an account with Euro and it came to £72ish all in I think..

Well this morning the car barely started, combined with no power steering until the alternator charged the battery for about 20 seconds and the auto-box was stuck in 2nd for the whole trip to work... Guess I have to bring forward my new battery ordering :(

Are you sure you were quoted on the right battery? Dealer price for battery should be under 150 for our cars - it is only the newer cars which require the more expensive battery (can't remember the exact name of the battery type). I suspect you were quoted the incorrect one, as those really are 240quid+ from a dealer.

My BMW was in at the place at the time and I got the guy to quote me it.

Currently chasing for them to do something under Warranty as didn't realise until this morning it may be covered, thanks to Stuart there :)

Maybe stick a battery conditioner on yours for a few days until the new battery is fitted, depending on how long of course? Worth getting one anyway for when the car is laid up for any extended periods of time (in my experience, charge started to deplete noticeably after around 2-3 weeks of inactivity).

I have a battery conditioner but I am up in the land of Brummy with work Mon-Thurs.

It's going into the local dealer tonight to be diagnosed and replaced if needed. They said there are three battery sizes that could fit it, and if I could tell them which I had currently so they could get a new one in.

Told them it wasn't OEM and so I just want the factory spec battery fitted and to find it out for me.

Hopefully shall be resolved by tomorrow!

I had to change my battery last year ,( it turned out to be a starter fault, but thought the 10 yr old had done well,) ipaid £120 from BMW....240 is a bit steep :driving:

You dont need to code the new battery on the older cars. Its post 2008 cars that need coded, this was mentioned in previous threads on the same subject.

Thanks :)

+1 for the bosch s5, but the type 110 is a better size-match than the type 096. At least it is on my car. The 096 is a little taller.
