Battery Life

The one in the MR is original, so 9 1/2 Years old, and 60k miles. Still going strong. :D

That’s impressive but I’d seriously consider replacing it for a new one before it bites you in the arse

Why would the battery bite me in the arse. :?

If it leaves you stranded somewhere, only happens at the most inconvenient time possible-I think bmw fit a sensor to detect such moments & then kill the car

How long do batteries last these days? ...........

...On the flip side - the old fashioned lead acid battery fitted to my first Z4 (2004 E85) and sold to a pal, is still going strong !

Progress eh?

Amazing but the battery in my June 2003 e85 is the original date stamped BMW unit! I always stick it on the Ctek when it's not used for a week or more but I can't imagine it can last much longer, there again who knows?

What is battery programming anyway?

Would you mind pointing out where the date stamp is I'm blowed if I can find it on the one I have just taken off mine.

Production manufacturing of all kinds often date mark products using year & week number rather than a date, there is the code 03/25 stamped on the neg - terminal (which is 2003 week 25 = June when my car was built). The etched serial number starts 0306 as well which tally's with the year week code.

Cheers will check mine.

I chucked a new battery in mine two years ago and didn't know anythng about this programming thing. Not had any issues.

Your thread encouraged me to test my battery yesterday, under starting load the volts were dropping to below 10 when starting despite using a ctek battery conditioner.

One Bosch S5 agm battery later she starts up quicker than ever and on starting the volts went down to only 11. Ten years out of the original battery seems fair :D

There was shock and horror when I posted the price BMW seemed to be charging themselves for a replacement battery under warranty - but I’ve just put my reg into Europarts and a Bosch battery is £364

Not a typo £364 that will be the most expensive battery I’ve ever owned!

I’d look elsewhere Ron, that’s a bonkers price :o
Rob

If had been paying I certainly would have. The battery was replaced on a new car warranty at a little over two years old - I think it’s a shocking price!

I bought mine from ECP £180 using one of their discount codes.

Last year I paid £150 for an AGM battery with a lifetime warranty from Halfords, still got the receipt and not had any issues.

If it ever packs in, I will be straight back down for an FOC swap... :D

That’s the only way to go if you intend to keep the car for years and years!
Does the small print include / exclude any replacement on the same lifetime warranty?

Mine looked to be on the way out, but bought a Ctek mxs5 charger and ran the Recond twice and it seems as though it might have revived it for a little while.

I think it is just for the same type. I will have to look at the receipt. If for whatever reason they don't uphold what I expect from them, I will just shout and complain until I get what I want or ejected from the store.

The test there is to leave it off for a week or so and see if it cranks. I got away with a slightly dodgy battery on a Ctek for a couple of years but after it completely died a couple of times, we got to a point last winter where is struggled to last 24 hours after a charge up or long drive.

Yes I will monitor it over the winter and see if it holds up, if I get a few more months use out it, that will save wear on a new battery
