Battery dying?

Today I thought I would mod my nav system a bit, creating custom firmware using POIson to get audible alerts for speed cameras etc. Anyway, the first update with custom boot image worked but also caused my dash lights to flicker and act crazy so I re-burnt the image without the custom startup screen.

I updated the Sat Nav OS with the new image and it booted up fine and everything seemed great until I tried to start the car. Things clicked and whirred in ways I'd never heard before! :o At first I wondered if it was the firmware, thinking perhaps it's linked through the iBUS and somehow it has upset the cars ECU (£££ flying through my head). I started to panic a bit and did some more investigating. I got to the battery and the indicator is showing as black so not fully charged and now I'm 90% sure it's a dead/run down battery, possibly from me farting about with the sat nav stuff without the engine being on.

I've further confirmed this by noticing that when I go to turn the engine over the lights all dim etc.

So, I hope you liked my little story and the whole Sat Nav bit is a bit irrelivant but more interesting than just posting up about my dead battery. :D

Should I try jump starting the Z4 and going for a longish drive or just purchase a battery charger. Or maybe even buy a new battery, it could be the original battery as it's a BMW battery and must be around 6 years old! :!:

Sorry to hijack but as far as I'm aware you cannot get audible speed camera warnings even with custom firmware.

Happy to be proved wrong though.

You can with V32 and using the poison software, just requires a bit of fiddling about with ISOs.

Just get a new battery and be done with it. If messing with the sat nav causes it to die there's not much life left in it and at 6 years it's overdue. Mine was also just short of 6 years.

I just (2 weeks ago) fitted a brand new Halfords Calcium battery. £100 with 4 year warranty. Don't need it anymore as I'm converting to a race battery. Not my best purchase decision...

lol, ok - fair enough! I think new battery is a good idea as well. Typical how it's fine for nigh on 6 years and then as soon as I buy the car, two weeks later it needs replacing! Bah!

Any recommendations for batteries and where to buy in the UK?

EDIT: What spec of battery do I need for the Z4?

Ok, popped along to Halfauds and picked up a calcium one, probably exactly the same one you bought cj10jeeper! £100 all in and the car is back to its former awesomeness. :driving: Plus I now get speed camera alerts as well - tested it on the way to Tescos. 8)

Thanks for the link. My next Zed may have the BMW Nav in it. If it does, a little hacking..... I may look at the OS and see if it can be replaced.

Glad you got sorted. Advantage of Halfords is of course the 4 year guarantee so do diarise it and just take it back after 47 months if it has the slightest weakness. They'll give you another one and if lucky with another 4years

Cool, if you do ever go for it, give me a shout as I have various things you may want that could save you a bit of time. What would you replace the OS with? Would be amazing to have the various sensor outputs to the screen, so people can build custom screens to show the data they want to see, the possibilities are endless with the right knowledge! :D
