Battery disconnect - lots of electrical issues

20240622_010018.jpg

My car wouldn't start so I disconnect the negative to put in a new ignition switch. It had power before, but no crank or clicking when teting to start. Put battery back and had to use a jumper to jump it. Car started right up.

But now here's a list of things that don't work...
AC only blowing air, not cold
No dashboard lights except an ABS notification
Soft top does not open
Only passenger side door locks when I push ctr console lock button
Emergency lights work, but no repeat click sound

Anybody know how to fix this???

As per usual, you need codes read.
Battery health can cause all sorts of issues. Sounds like yours may not be in the best health.
Jump starting continually is starting to provoke a few failures, particularly of the airbag modules. These are on the kbus circuit and a fault with one module can affect the others on the kbus.
In your case I would definitely start with a new battery.

Does the heater fan work at all speeds or only in low? You could also have slipped into transport mode.

Disconnecting the battery “should” just reset everything, a low voltage will give all sorts of errors, I would start again with a fully charged or new battery, cancel the fault codes and see if anything comes back

Yeah, but you said when you refitted it, you had to jump start the car. So the battery has some kind of issue.

I'd definitely recommend starting off with a fully charged battery, which may need to be a new one if yours had discharged that much as once that happens they are usually beyond saving.

I started my Z4 with a jumper pack in 2020 when the battery went flat and got 3 random warning lights. BMWs of this age throw up all sorts of issues when the battery is low.

Soft top issue. Did you put the shelf in the boot back down after reconnecting battery? I assume you raised it for better access.

A battery that is left unused for just 6 months is probably scrap and can’t be recovered, either the car needs using or battery needs taking off and charging periodically.

It’s much better to use the car give it a good run every couple of weeks, particularly soft tops they get damp inside which plays havoc with electronics

I did fix it. In the end, all I did was disconnect the battery for 30 minutes, then hook it up again and everything worked...

I believe I took off the positive and negative this time. Previously I had only taken off the negative.
