Battery - AGAIN!!! getting a little frustrated now.

Hi everyone

Ok, so hubby's mates at Autofficina quoted approx 100-150 for decent battery for the z4M. Dealer who I bought the car from has already dispatched one this afternoon for £72 that's a "GSF car parts" battery, no. 971 AA0961 -he says is perfectly suitable for the M. I'm no mechanic so wouldn't have a clue.

Until the guys at Autofficina have had a chance to see this part, I'm concerned that it is just some cheap job that won't cut the mustard - am I worrying over nothing? the Autofficina guys are good buddies with hubby and I would rather trust a quality job than stick some cheap kit in my car.

Am I needlessly throwing my toys out the pram? wondering if my 3 month "warranty" is worth it's own salt.

At the end of the day it's a battery.

It's not like the z4m is a 8 tonne tank with £7,000 of tv screens and games consoles in the back.

I'm sure it'll be fine, don't panic :)

I would just check that the new battery is exactly the same rating as the one currently on your ///M, I think I read on an earlier thread this week that if the AH number is different it could cause problems, sorry if a little vague I'm no expert!!

I'm sure you will get a proper answer from one of the guys soon, good luck

The genuine battery from BMW will set you back almost £200 - and the BMW ETK suggests it's the same battery for both the coupé & roadster, so no extra oomph required for the hood motor.

The GSF catalogue doesn't list the Z4, but that number resolves to a 74ah battery one - and at that price I would assume it's a 'wet' rather than AGM battery. They do list a 'Banner AGM' 70ah battery for about £130, and I assume that's meant to be the 'proper' one, but your dealer prefers to buy/supply a 'perfectly fine' (despite having different specs/construction) cheaper one.

Personally I'd be pushing for genuine, or OEM spec (i.e. 70ah, 700ah cold crank, AGM structure) battery at the least. After all, I doubt you'd be happy if they replaced some other component with a pattern/aftermarket/cheap part.

There's also a Bosch S6-001 battery that's suitable for our cars for about £125 (with 5 year warranty).

Genuine battery from Jamie at Sopers will be <£150 I reckon. Worth giving him a call in the spare dept, 01522 690000 to see what he can do. Mention this forum and I'm sure you'll get some discount.

iirc 70AH sounds right for the OEM. I certainly would want to be sure it was an AGM battery at teh very least.

£72 delivered Bosch, if it's not too late:

you can get a brand new AGM stock battery from bminiparts for 140 bags...... Absolutely stick with the stock unit imo at that price level....

That's not the correct AGM battery though.

The S6 range is Bosch's AGM range - and are double the price of their 'normal' range.

Gentlemen, thank you so much for your help and advice, it is very much appreciated. I don't like being fobbed off by dealers or made to feel that I'm none the wiser because I'm a girl! :x (what car do you drive? er......"a black one" :D ). Have made my thoughts about requiring an appropriate battery clear, if that's not met with a fitting response I'll cut my losses with the dealer and just crack on with getting the AGM / gel / larger unit. Thanks for all your input  (it's just a car, it's just a car........get some perspective.......everything changed when I joined up here!!).

100% correct, AGM batteries are so expensive for a reason ;-) Thye are very hard wearing, can take being discharged many a time, and if maintained properly or used reguarly will easily last 5+ years.... these agm units are commonly used in the marine world for their heavy duty nature and are encased in glass fibre within the battery...... expensive but well worth the money imo.... especially @ bmini part prices.

I hope you don't mean that they are asking you for £72 for a battery that failed on day one?!!

No way! although I was fobbed off with the fact that I'd been fiddling with the radio/bluetooth for just 3 mins with engine off as the reason the battery wouldn't work! I won't use the battery that's been provided by the dealer given hubby and cronies will put in a larger /gel battery that is appropriate. It's just the faff and palava that came with it :x

Wouldn't surprise me if the S5 lasts longer though.
