Bagged a Spitfire

Hi all,

Every so often I like to attend the odd auction and if something catches my eye have a bit of a bid so this morning off I went. Whilst looking around the auction room I came across a 1/12 scale model of a spitfire. I think it has a wooden frame and is skinned with aluminium with solid alloy propellers, exhausts and a heavy alloy stand, I can't see any plastic pieces apart from rubber tyres. Its made by Authentic Models and bit of googling at the auction I found these things are pretty costly to buy new. Anyways a few bids and this thing of beauty came home with me and have to say its a gorgeous thing once assembled and pretty large. Thought I would share some pics :)

1/12 is huge!

I had a plastic 1/24 spitfire which I was very proud of when I was young and it was massive.

What's the wingspan on your model. Looks great by the way

Many thanks, wingspan is 30 inches and length is around 24 so quite large, the canopy pulls back and undercarriage drops down, all the aerolons work, no engine detail though. I remember as a kid making the Airfix 1/24 scale P51 Mustang which I sprayed silver, I think that's why this model caught my eye as reminded me of when I built it :)

So how much did it set you back?

My final bid was 310 and retails from 570 to 600, you can pick them up off eBay for a bit less than retail from 400. I don't think I would have paid much more than I did although I've seen the P51 Mustang now

That's a good price for a quality piece of kit

Loved to have heard the conversation when you got home "did you get a table dear?" , "no, but look at this!"

That's proper lovely tim! Good bag!
U going to paint it?

Thanks Chris, unsure on the painting, I'm not sure what mk Spitfire the model is, I really just love it in the silver as it stands, it reminds me of Schneider Trophy Spitfires which I think were all aluminium. I think the model I have is an earlier mk. I think only later post war Spitfires that remained in service were silver and uncamourflaged.

I think it looks pretty generic design-wise as it has only one extended browning gun per wing. What a shame if theres no indication of mark!
There was a dizzying array of spitty variants as i found out when i did a school project on them.
I think it looks fab in ally finish but i'd still be tempted to paint it in the 'invasion stripes' colour scheme as this was my favourite. I think it looks really menacing.

From when I built airfix models as a kid I think that's a Supermarine Spitfire, if I recall correctly the non marine ones had 2 guns per wing that you couldn't see but the marine spitty's had 1 in each wing protruding. I may well be wrong though.

That's a fine looking model. 8)

Used to have a P51 line control model. Never was any good at flying it though.
