Bad rattle under engine.

Last 2 days I have developed a rattle, it's sounds like it's coming from under the engine or under your feet.

It's makes a rattle sound on start up then you can't hear it. It doesn't make a noise again until your "in between gears". What I mean by that is, you come to a corner slowly, too fast for 1st but a little to slow for 2nd. When you give it the extra revs it sounds like it's got a bag of spanners rattling and banginf about under the car.

A bloke who does old cars up who lives near me listened to it and said either the exhaust has come lose or that the cats come lose. I'm hoping big time it's not the car as I imagine that will cost a fortune. He did say he can hear a slight blow when revving the car so hopefully it's the exhaust.

If it was the cat would I be having any other problem. I'm not losing any power at all and once your driving normally you can't hear any rattling etc. No warning or engine lights showing either.

Going to take it to local exhaust place in the morning for them to take a look at but was hoping for some advice this evening.

It does sound like an exhaust leak, considering I can't actually hear it. The cats are welded into the exhaust manifold, so don't worry about them, it's very unlikely to be the problem. Your neighbour is probably unaware how the cats are configured in Zeds. Since the pipes are stainless, there shouldn't be any holes either, though it is possible for a seam to split. That pretty much leaves two pairs of joints as possibilities. The forward ones are usually difficult to pull apart, so I'm guessing one of the rear sleeved joints have come loose. If that's not it, maybe a pipe did split somewhere. Shouldn't be a difficult fix.

Went out for another drive and see my mate. He listened to it and he said its def coming from underneath the engine. As I said before it doesn't do it at all apart from when you out a bit of stress on the engine by revving it in the wrong gear or when starting up.

Fingers crossed its nothing major.
 
Should have said. It does make the whole engine vibrate when it does it. As soon as your driving and up to speed it's all fine.
 
Hi I had what sounds a similar rattle on my zed only this week. To me it sounded exhaust related, but I couldn't work out if it was from the engine or from below the drivers seat. Fearing the worst I took it to a local exhaust place and they quickly diagnosed the problem....have a look at the pic. It was a simple bracket that had snapped, I ordered the part and it will be getting fitted this week. Only cost £22 from bmw, so I was quite relieved. Sounded the same as all your symptoms except the engine vibration :/. Hope that helpseduqa6uh.jpg

Been to local exahaust centre and his had it up on the ramp and the exhaust is fine. No leaks, no loose joints nothing. He said it actually looks brand new. No rust, dents, marks on it at all. He checked the at by tapping the exhaust with a rubber hammer where the cat is housed, said it's not rattling or anything.

It's still doing the rattling and shaking when you are pulling away in a to high gear. I know the answer is don't do it but I've never heard it like this before and it don't sound good. When driving up to speed all is good.

Not sure if I may have a loose mount or something as it's defiantly vibrating a lot.

Gonna have to take it Bmw but scared to hear what price they will want me to pay.
 
Hi,
Before taking it to BMW, I would ask the tyre place you visited to take a look at your engine/gearbox mounts - A rattle when loading/unloading the drivetrain is certainly a sign of a engine/gearbox mount problem.

Why BMW?, Where are you?, someone will be able to advise a decent Indy near you I'd imagine.
 
Be truthful with you I have no idea why I said I would take it BMW.

I live in Romford, Essex. Anyone know any decent indies in the area ??? It needs a oil service as well.
 
Took it to a garage where my in-laws friends, husband works (or something like that).

He took it for a spin and straight away said it sounded like the belt was juddering under stress. When we got back opened up bonnet and had a poke and prod around. He said one of the belt tensioners bearings had gone. I'm not very technical with cars so way to explain what it was is that it's the smallest wheel the Belt goes round. If you pull on the belt it's got lots of movement. Said it shouldnt be that much. He then started the car up and if you put you finger on the bolt on the front of the wheel you can feel that it's loose and wobbling a little.

His gonna replace it on Friday. £150 for the part and labour !?!?
