Backboxes

I've had a quick search and I thought I knew this but what I'm seeing under the car doesn't match with what I thought I knew.

Basically my exhaust has been making a racket for a few days now but I've just got an opportunity to get under the car and look.

I realised earlier that the backbox/silencer wasn't hanging correctly but when I looked under the car I noticed that half of the clamp between it and the rest of the car is missing.

Do these work as clamps against a lip on either end of the exhaust sections or should they be working as flanges with piece actually welded to each half?

I was under the impression that it was welded but that's not how it looks under the car.

All this said what would be involved in fixing it?

These clamps rot away as you have found. Two options, either clamps from Peugeot for a few quid or some expensive cnc machined two parts ones at over a hundred quid. I know which ones I'd go for. Do a search on here, inkey$ had the problem and did a good write up from memory.

Ah, right. So as I understand it, the ends are currently clamped together but the clamps are not available from BMW. So my options are:

1. Peugeot clamps.
2. CNC clamps from eBay.
3. Have flanges welded on as Inkey$ did.
4. Replace exhaust from the CAT-back.

Is this correct?

I put on Stromung backboxes a few months ago. My flanges were completely rotten. I opted for the Peugeot clamps first off. Couldn't get a proper seal or get the backboxes to sit right. So I plumped the cash on CNC machined 2 piece flanges. Expensive but they do the job perfectly and won't rot like the standard flanges. Well worth paying the money IMO. No point penny pinching on something that holds your expensive exhaust together.
