Back brakes binding

My back brake (or brakes) are binding. Whenever I apply the handbrake it will bind for a few moments when I release it and pull away. Couple of questions 1) what's the best jack point to raise both wheels together and 2) are the handbrake mechanisms obvious when I take the wheel off or are they all internal out of sight
 
There is a rear central jacking point where the two cross bars meet underneath at the back near the diff.

You will need to remove the rear discs to see the handbrake shoes.

The Z4 will hold the main brakes on for a moment if you move off on a hill or something. You sure its not this giving you that feeling of brakes not released?
 
Hi. No it's squealing for about 10 secs after I pull away. It's gradually got worse so I really must have a look today. Cheers for the jacking point info :thumbsup:
 
Before doing any stripping down, on a quiet road at 20 mph pull on the handbrake for 100m so the shoes rub on the surfaces, get hot and clean up.

Correct way to bed in new shoes and cures many ills with them.

Been out for a spin and did the 20 mph brake thingy. A couple of times there was a loud bang and the lever slipped :o
Did this operation a few times but the squeal got really bad so I've stripped the discs down, cleaned up the shoes with a flap wheel and given everything a good clean with brake cleaner. I also backed the shoes off a tad. So far (touch wood) all seems ok. Handbrake has got a bit more movement on it so I'll see how it goes. Thank you everyone for your help and advice :thumbsup:
 
Sounds like the adjuster slipped. I think I would have adjusted them up as we used to do with old drums - tight them loosen just enough for the drum to rotate freely.

See how it goes, but so long as the brake is effective then job done.

I've had very little handbrake movement since I asked my indie to adjust them up some months ago. It's a fine line as before he did that the handbrake wouldn't hold the car. Now I've backed them off slightly the lever feels better but it needs pulling up hard to hold the car again :headbang: it's due an oil service so I'll live with it till then. It might be fine :D
At least I've cleared the dust out and cleaned the inside of the wheels :driving:
