Average mpg test

Did a test today; travelled 160 miles roundtrip 95% of which was motorway (with the top down of course). So decided to carry out an average mpg test.
On the outward journey I drove steadily, cruising at between 70 and 80 with light acceleration. On the return journey I reset the average mpg and drove back normally, that’s to say enthusuastically - so giving it the beans whenever the mood took me (the acceleration from 80 to 90 in 6th is pretty damn impressive).
Anyway the results were that the outward journey achieved an average mpg of 39.7 and the homeward an average mpg of 35.7
The more I drive this car the more impressed I am with the versatility of the 3 litre engine

Our aged X3 3.0 petrol auto showed 29.5mpg after 500 miles over motorway route to Normandy
Pretty pleased fully loaded , steady 70mph / 3 adults 1 terrier .

On your next motorway journey once you are doing a steady 70 to 80 reset the average mpg and keep a steady speed. I would be amazed if after 30 or 40 miles your average mpg hasn't climbed into the high thirties.

With that 2.5 I'd be resetting everything or getting it looked at. I used to get 36mpg on the one I had.

On mine I get.....

24 - mpg around town.

36 - 37 mpg on the motorway.

No difference in mpg with Tesco Momentum 99 or BP Ultimate.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 just been fitted on the car so I'll see what it's like when they're broken in.

Managed to get an average of 38.4 over a 260 mile trip from Essex to Stockton that was a127 m25 m11 a14 a1 a19

Tbh I was very impressed as I hadn't had much above 23mpg before that on local stuff.

Only managed 35.6 on the way back but I put that down to cheap Morrisons fuel and the last 50 miles spirited driving cross country to avoid Friday night m25

Overall very happy and looking forward to a drive to devon next week.

My Zed averages 23mpg and goes up to >28mpg on motorways. Not exactly economical but no worse than the rather non-exciting Jag X Type 2.5l AWD I had before.

Our Discovery averages almost 30mpg, which I think is OK for a car of that size.

It was a few years ago now but iirc I got 42mpg from my 3 litre coupe on the way back from Edinburgh to Derbyshire..

I reckon I could have got 500 miles out of the tank if I was careful

On a recent trip up the M40, my 3.0 was showing an average of 44 MPG, and 33 around the town, so how accurate is the trip computer ??

If I drive my 3.0si coupe like the pope, I get ~35mpg combined. If I'm a little more enthusiastic then that's down to 30-31. Haven't done much motorway driving as I tend to use my E46 330D M which gets 48+.

I always reset mpg whilst at stop, which lowers the figures but I'd more "real world".

Drove to Lake District and back this weekend. Averaged 32mpg in my 2l

31.5 MPG is my ownership average (2.5si). 3 yrs, mostly mixed driving. It'll return 39mpg at a steady 80 on the motorway (km/h, of course...).

Habitual block shifting between 2nd and 6th seems to keep the mpg up and still provide a bit of fun.

Well, there is nothing about block shifting itself that saves fuel. I just mean that accelerating hard up to speed and then picking the highest gear possible to maintain it is quite a good way to have some (legal) fun and still keep the mpgs up. Especially on motorway slip roads!

I'm going to be a massive geek and chip in that you should be going from 2nd to 5th at 60 to get in the torque band... I've got a graph and everything...
