Aux noise

With the help of others here, I added the aux input to my 2006 Z4. When playing from the iPod I noticed a lot of background noise. When I played the iPod on another unit it sounded fine. Thinking it might be the mini-plug, I switched to another and while do so, noticed that when nothing is plugged in, with the radio on and AUX selected, you can heard the noise all by itself. Not a hum as much as background noise, like a bad S/N or static.

Anyone else have the problem?
 
I think the problem is the difference between other sources, such as FM and the AUX. If I play FM and switch to AUX, the signal/sound is too low. I compensate with headunit volume and the noise appears. Solution is probably to raise the output volume from the iPod. I'll try that after I look at the instructions on how to do that.
