AUX Installed

I'm happy to say that my AUX installation went well. Big thank you to a certain forum member for selling me his cable  ;)

Getting the air vents above the stereo removed was definitely the hardest part. Took 1/2 an hour of fiddling with screwdrivers :headbang:

I decided not to install the faceplate under the dash. I reckon it looks neater without....

Stereo now cycles through AUX

I've now hooked up an old but cherished MP3 player that has 5 band graphic EQ. I have the 10 speaker hi-fi, with basic DSP. The EQ on the MP3 player is fantastic. I've adjusted the settings which has improved the mid range sound significantly :)

Quick question - has anyone used gold plated stereo jacks, and does this give any noticeable improvement in sound quality?

Thanks navid. Yeah was the first time taking the vents out.

I watched a few YouTube videos after my first attempt which really helped. Would take less time if I had to do it again, but fingers crossed I'll not need to do it again soon!

You won't notice any difference in using gold plated jacks, other than the lighter wallet. None of the other connectors are "audiophile" and the car will absorb any possible improvement. I reckon you've put yours in exactly the same place I did (using the circle in the back of the moulding as a target). I didn't fit the faceplate either, but mainly because the combined thickness of the plastic and faceplate was too much for the port and there wasn't enough thread left to put the ring on!

Isn't it great to have an mp3 player and all your own music available again :)

Yeah I can finally get rid of all my CDs, most I which I'm bored of, hehe

I installed one in the same place on the last z4. This one came with it fitted but it is right on the drivers side which to me is a bit of a dull place as I want the cable to run down the left side to the iplod which sits in the little cubby hole.

Good Point...here on the opposite side of the world where the driver sits on the left I think I might want it on the left side too. Is there any obstacle to installing on the left side of the panel? I plan to put one in when the weather warms up.

Isnt the face plate symmetrical?(thinking you could end to end it)

I think the lugs that secure it to the dash are different at the top than they are at the bottom. But the shape is symmetrical...

Begs the question...are you experiencing sound quality issues with the mini jack from the headphone jack? Have you tried a connector from the Iphone Dock port rather than the headphone jack? I'm just wondering if that would improve the sound as I have seen connectors that plug into the Iphone docking port with both USB charger cord and a mini jack cord...I'm wondering if they are worthwhile?

Adamski,

I did the exact same mod today, glad to hear you hadn't experienced any problems other than the fiddly air vent.

Stromtech, I was thinking the same, I am using a a 3.5mm stereo jack to stereo jack and noticed the sound to be a bit on the weaker side but have one of those Y cables ordered, will let you know if it makes any difference, would be interested to see.

I've seen the iPod connectors that route from the base of the iPod instead of the headphone jack. But I'm really liking the 5 band EQ on my older MP3 player.

Sound quality is better than CD, but bass etc is slightly weaker with less punch.

I have a trained ear for good sound, as I used to DJ a lot. The sound is cleaner thought the AUX, but lacks some punch... if you know what I mean?

Yeah, know exactly what you mean...wonder if one of these will help? But then it's another item to plug in and charge!

Looks interesting, but yeah it would be another item to keep charged, and storage would be an issue.

Might swap to my iPhone and see if there's any improvement

If you do try the Iphone I would appreciate your feedback on sound quality. I am planning to install an Aux jack soon but if the sound quality sucks then I may consider one of the other options.

Thanks

Used to use a 3.5 to 3.5 lead but have now use one of these and i think the sound is slighty better than via the headphone socket.

The sound quality is good. It's clearer and less "muddy" at high volume. It might be the device/player. Will keep you updated

Cheers mate, that could be the answer :)

I ahve seen something similar with both the mini jack cable as well as a USB cable for charging...I'll have to dig for a link, seems a good solution.
