Automatic Z4

I have the SMG and I completely love it. It makes the car for me.

Attitudes towards automatic gearboxes are very outdated in my opinion, and I am guilty of it too as I would not buy an auto Z4 – all the usual misguided arguments: old man's transmission, not in control, no skill, saps performance etc... but in reality they are far better suited to road cars than a manual. Unless you are wanting to blat around everywhere you go then surely the auto is a more refined driving proposition? I see the Z4 more of a tourer than a sportscar.

SMG puts you somewhere in the middle with the advantages of both setups. I do see the manual cars as being very outdated now I have lived with SMG for a while.

Well said!

I came from an automatic car (Lexus IS300) and I owned that car for about 4 years and it was still a blast. Traffic was much easier to tolerate and it was pretty nice to not worry about switching gears, etc.

My Z4 is the first manual car I've ever owned and YES, it is much more fun than an automatic but that's not to say Auto is a slacker either. It just depends on where you commute to, what your lifestyle is and what you want to sacrifice. I agree about the Auto vs Manual being a dated debate because as technology progresses--automatic transmissions are actual more capable of switching gears BETTER than a driver with a manual transmission.

I'm just glad BMW is one of the few companies left that actually promotes manual transmission of automatic but at least you get to choose ;)
