Autoglass chip repair under insurnace

So i had a Chip "repaired" today. It looks worse than it was before - the lines running out of the chip have gotten bigger.

The guy said that despite the lines getting slightly bigger the filling should stop any further expansion of the stone chip.

Whist it looks minor its irritating to look at so now I am thinking of replacing screen but very apprehansive due to people posting on here saying Autoglass have previously messed up screen replacement on Z4's

The technician did say that even if I insist that BMW re-fit the glass, they are goingt to use Autoglass anyway.

My main question is though - will me having this repair done count as a claim off the insurance? I completely failed to think about this before - only just struck me.

Not true. I had a replacement screen done at BMW, and it was a BMW technician using BMW glass (not patent cr*p that Autoglass uses). I would never let Autoglass replace a windscreen, done once and never again. The glass was not even straight, had defects all over the place.
 
A windscreen replacement does need to be declared on insurance, I think they are concerned if you have 5 or more claims in last 4 years. I have 4 now (2 windscreens and 2 non faults :evil: ) Autoglass have done it both times, no real problems
 
flimper, i read other forums online which state that windscreen replacement is regarded as an insurance claim for some insurers including Admiral (Bell) which is who I'm with. Which insurance company are you with?
 
Steer bloody clear of autoglass... I recently had them replace my driver's side window after some scrote smashed it.

Cost of new glass from BMW: £78 + VAT + fitting (prob about an hour)
Cost of going to autoglass: £75 excess + £651 worth of damage to seals, regulator and 6 dents in the door caused by cretin autoglass technician

Autoglass head office were actually very good in getting me the money to sort it out, but I won't let another autoglass pleb near my car as long as I live!
 
ahhh drivers side window. Windscreen is a different ballgame - we're talking 650 + VAT at least from BMW.
 
this is true... though I've never heard a happy ending story from Autoglass fitting a windscreen to a nice car.
I've heard cut seals, several unsuccessful attempts, scratched paintwork... even one where the idiot left his pot of that horrible black seal painty stuff on the dash and promptly knocked it over, all over the dash, seats, centre console and carpets.

Personally, if you're going through insurance, I'd ring them & explain that I don't trust autoglass as far as I could throw them and see if they'll pay for it to be done by bmw/indy

speaking hypotheticaly of course, I once....... (in a dream) had a chip on my windscreen that I really did not want repaired ........ of course what do you do .....

an angel whispered in my dreamy ear ........ whack a hammer through the window ....... then go get it replaced .......... which of course I didn't do and was not at all pleased with the result after the make believe insurance company didn't pay ...... errrrrr of course.
 
While on dartmoor (having a great time on great roads it must be said)...a stone from a lorry caused this....

Going to need a new windscreen sadly - BMW want £675 and Direct line would only pay £125 of that...

If I go with autoglass (£75) any advice? I planned to take lots of pictures of the current fitting. Had anybody been successful in getting them to fit an OEM screen rather than one of their own on the insurance?
 
I still having same problem with my window repair. It seems the driver side door window supplied is sitting just slightly higher than the glass pane in the back. I experiencing a lot if wind noise where the window meets the back pane of glass. I looks many auto glass companies who help me out in repairing under my insurance coverage.
 
I don't understand the confusion. Most policies have windscreen cover which does not have to be declared at renewal time. Ring your insurance, tell them you would like to make a windscreen claim and they will sort it.

Autoglass have changed mine no problems and I only had to pay the £75 excess. No drama and no stress. If they f**k it up, they are liable for it.

Agree,

Autoglass did a tricky heated screen on my other car no problems, although I suspect they deliberately turned the tiny star in to a crack when they 'tested' it, but I was happy as I didn't want a repaired screen anyway and it saved me from the 'hammer dream' scenario :wink:
 
Ive had two windscreens fitted by Autoglass on our Mazda6 in the last 2 yrs one for a crack the other for a large stone chip with no problems by the Chester branch.There could be different standards at accross the country.
Autoglass are more used to fitting windscreens than BMW mechanics ,so i cant see any problems with going with Autoglass.
The Mazda is insured with LV and no inc in premium.
 
Now you know how much they would have charged your insurance company if you were covered for windscreens. I would hate to think how much they would have quoted for a front heated screen like what is on mine. It makes the £50 glass excess on my policy seem minute in comparison. Unfortunately it is all about making money at the end of the day. Searching for the good auto glass mechanic should be first preference.

I've also had my windscreen replaced by them with no issues at all.

As for the insurance I've just found out the hard way you must disclose a windscreen replacement as a claim.
 
I have had my windshield replaced a few times in the past several years. It has always been covered by my auto insurance included in my policy. Maybe that is just from my insurance company, or maybe I am paying for it and am unaware.

I did mine with autoglass when a chip turned into a crack on my last car. Bandits charged me VAT on the excess :headbang:

I had a chip repaired in my audi this year and it did show up on the renewal form as a claim,I was a bit miffed with this as I was told otherwise by the repairer,I could have paid him a tenner otherwise.
