Auto v Manual

At the risk of raising the ire of all the slushbox owners on here, I cannot understand why anyone would buy a roadster with an auto box, surely the ethos of owning such a car is that you actually do the driving i.e make the decisions, and from this you derive the pleasure, I can only imagine a Google fully autonamous car that wafts you to your next destination is the obvious next step :)

i kinda felt the same, ive had a few different roadsters, all manual, but then bought an auto z4 which wasnt particularly what i was after but it was the best car i had seen within my budget, when i put it in sport mode with steptronic its is just as involving as any manual imho, the only difference is no clutch, not sure how that takes away all my driving decisions, i guess if there was no steptronic i would have felt a bit different, dont regret going auto at all with the zed, waft when commuting and chilling, sport mode when tooling about, best of both worlds imho, very glad i bought it :D

I've driven a 3 litre VW beetle over in America and that was obviously an auto. Anyway I'm on about the drive. A manual actually feels like you are driving a car. I prefer going through the gears. Personal preference.
 
Was hard to find a 3.0l manual when I got mine love thrashing it though the gears. My everyday diesel is a auto though :-)
 
On some of those tight Derbyshire Peak roads today to have an auto would be a crime. Came down to an hairpin bend braked, into second, turn in power out it just as to a manual
 
I must say that my ideal choice would have been a Z4M roadster, BUT my issues with a weak left foot led me to buying an Auto. Not an ideal choice as a drivers car, but it is a pain free way of owning a six pot roadster, that can give me some form of spirited driving pleasure.

I got a manual Coupe. Love the car but actually wish it was an automatic.

My a4 sline is an auto and is lovely.

I must be getting old and lazy!
 
When I had my Z4MC I was an avid 'Manual' supporter. I just couldn't understand the appeal of an automatic, for me there just isn't any driver involvement.

Anyway, I then sold my Z4MC and was convinced to test-drive a DCT M4....what a great box, very quick, very punchy.....but it just didnt win me over from a "grin-factor" point of view and I ended up with the manual M4. Yes, the manual is slower and supposedly the DCT "suits the nature of the engine" (whatever that means), but I just felt much more connected to the car with the manual box. As quick as the DCT is, it felt like the flappy paddles were merely a 'request-form' and had no direct connection to the drivetrain.

It is horses for courses at the end of the day, but for driver involvement there can only be one un-compromised winner.
 
With a manual it is so simple. I the driver decide, and in a sports car with a nice sounding engine I would have it no other way.
