Cars not got any history of having it's auto transmission fluid changed in it's 116k miles.

I've read flushing it this late is a recipe to introduce issues that weren't there previously however an oil leak is coming from somewhere around their..

Is there a way to check the level and top it up at home on the drive or is it a garage job?

The auto transmission is supposed to be sealed for life, but many forum members have claimed a benefit from a fluid change. Some BMW garages won’t do it, but a good independent should, and it’s not impossible to do at home (there will be a “how to” on here somewhere).

However, leaks from the transmission are not common. It more likely to be a failed sump gasket which is not an easy DIY job due to requiring an engine raise.

Sealed (filled) for life really translates to filled for the duration of the warranty, and it's complete bullshit. Walk away from any shop that won't do an auto trans service (that by the way, ZF the manufacturer, recommends). Heat is the enemy of most every fluid in your car, and auto boxes are hard on fluid.

If an automatic transmission specialist who sole purpose in life it to make money rebuilding and servicing automatic gearboxes refuses to change the fluid in mine then I'm listening to him.

Or maybe they’d rather have the £3000 rebuild job when it fails, than a £500 servicing job?

Sounds to me like an engine rebuilder saying that you don’t have to change your engine oil 😎
