Auto rear view mirror

Hello again people,
as mentioned in my "scrape scrape" thread my Z4 is currently back at the dealers and whilst in I asked them to check the mirror. I've never had an auto dimming one before and I find myself dazzled quite often, with no real noticable dimming occuring! The dealer has said it is functioning correctly. Should it go really noticably darker or is it just a very subtle effect? And does it only work at night? What about the dipsticks with badly adjusted headlights and/or foglamps that dazzle you during the daytime - many a time in my old E36 I would flip the mirror lever during daylight hours!

No expert but i think it only dims at night , to the extent you can't tell who's behind, you can just see the head lights which is rather annoying you can't tell if the rozzers are behind you. but certainly doesn't dazzle you.Durring the day i never notied it.

You could get a torch and shine it to the sensor in the front of the mirror to check if it darkens.

I cant imagine it would darken in the day... as headlights wouldnt be as bright as the daylight itself... and if it didnt you wouldnt notice it.

At night it does get noticeable darker.... to the point that all you see are the pin points for lights... but if you get some idiot with badly alligned hid's then they can still dazzle you a little.

Put a finger over the sensor, you will see the difference.

Also, put a torch on the sensor as well, the mirror should go black (almost).

Besides it still got a fault in it that I need to get sorted so noone is getting it ...

Mine only dims in the dark and I do not get any dazzle, If you are geting dazzle you must have a fault.

Thanks guys. It would appear that so far I've been driving in very well lit areas at night so it's not been dark enough for the mirror to dim very much.

No expert but i think it only dims at night , to the extent you can't tell who's behind, you can just see the head lights which is rather annoying you can't tell if the rozzers are behind you. but certainly doesn't dazzle you.Durring the day i never notied it.

x2 That annoys me aswell, I like to know whos behind me especially if its the fuzz. Am I right to assume you cant overide it?

Black electrical tape over the front sensor would do the trick.

But personally I like it dimming..... The side mirrors can be annoying when they are darken and you want to park near a curb and can't see it!

I like it dimming aswell but I suppose you cant have it both ways.

I had the same problem as Odyssey, mainly driving in city area's where there's street lights everywhere. However I recently found that sticking a squishy ear defender in the sensor hole on the front works nicely. Quick and easy to do, easy to remove if you need to, and totally reusable... I even managed to find a black one so it doesn't look out of place
