First ever auto I have owned is the Coupe, I had driven auto's in the past and the mere sight of that garish big lump of an auto gear stick made me feel queasy, I had always been a get the Manual box or get a bus kinda guy and had a series of increasingly brutal setup (racing clutches/flywheels to get the power through) Japanese turbo machines before I joined the ranks of BMW. When I test drove the Coupe I genuinely expected to hate it, so much so I wasnt going to bother going to see the car as having gone and driven a mk2 V6 TT with the DSG box, I found it to be utterly horrendous and a truly appalling box! But eventually after much humming and hawing I went and tried the Coupe... with the box in the "manual" mode I absolutely fell in love with it, the ability to have the comfort of an auto in traffic but take control when having fun was literally the best of both worlds! Was it the best possible choice though....? No.
I absolutely adore my Coupe and I love the current setup but there is that little part of me, that niggling little voice that wants the feel of the clutch back, that misses that little bit of direct control over the engine. Not so much that I need to change it, but I keep an eye on the Z4MC market and should a manual with the right spec for the right money come up....
