Auto Lights On

I'm sure it is possible but it's going to be a challenge.

You'd need a new switch unit:http://bmwfans.info/original/E85/roa/Z4 3.0i-M54/ECE/R/N/2005/06/mg-61/ill-61_1681/ for starters. One that has the auto on function built in.
Then the appropiate light sensor which I think is on the screen near the rain sensor and some retrofit wiring

My gut feeling is then it would need coding to recognise the function, but that's a guess.

Good luck - not a project I'd bother with given the costs, uncertainty and based on comments of some lack of merit (although I like them on mine)

Just not worh it IMO.

THey come on when you dont want them on, and dont come on when you do want them, just use the switch and save a fortune

personally I like them... the sensitivity can be adjusted can't it?

wouldnt say it was worth retrofitting though...

I like them too. Useful when going in an out of tunels and when driving into a dark garage or car park. I would not bother to retrofit nor pay money as a new fit option.

In terms of adjustment it may be possible but I did read a TSB that referred BMW technicians to explain that they operate in a different way to human perception of light/dark and therefore may appear to come on too soon or too late (my wording not exact from the TSB). Sounded like a technical 'get lost' response to complaints.

No, they are not adjustable.

Sensitivity is adjustable as a dealer adjust only. I have my set on level 3, the least sensitive.

On the X5, there were 5 levels - and again, I have it set a level 5.

That's it pvr - ta. I wish I could find the TSB about them, it clearly spelled out that the customer should be dissuaded from any changes. That to me implied it could be done at the stealers.

Having had one Zed without the feature and one with IMHO it's one of those features I could easily live without... :)

Valeo make a kit that can be incorporated to any car that does autolights on. http://www.valeo.com. Saw it advertised in the French press - not sure if it's available in the UK yet.

I very rarely leave the headlights on auto. The lights frequently would turn on when I drove under a bridge, when I got stuck in traffic under a large tree, etc....

Not worth it IMHO. Just turn them on or off manually.
