Auto-leveling headlights

Has anyone else had an issue whereby it would appear the auto-leveling sensor has stopped working on their xenon headlights and the headlights now point at the floor?

Noticed last night when I was on a country lane with no street lights. Pulled over and turned car and lights off and restarted both, and they leveled.

However, after I stopped again, they won't auto level at all.

Dangerous in the dark! I am assuming sensor and not something snapped as they did every so often actually work.

More often than not, they now don't.

Any ideas? Is it a job to replace, expensive?

Can't find any info the web!

Whereabouts is the sensor?

Can't really help you with fixing, but there isn't just one sensor. There's at least one in the front of the car and another at the rear (I think at opposing wheels).

Hi - I had this same issue and it took a while to figure out the problem which in the end was simple.

In my case and others I understand, the little arm of the front sensor (which is O/S) which connects to the suspension had snapped - apparently common and a bit of a design weakness. Have you had your springs changed or other suspension work done ? If the arm was not disconnected prior to work it's likely it's snapped - it's only plastic. The sensor is a small squarish box with the little arm -if you google you'll find a picture of it.

I ordered a new one from Joe at Sopers (just under £60 !) and had a local chap fit for £20 - I'm sure if you know what you're doing you could fit it yourself although my chap said it was pretty fiddly.

Hope this helps - it could of course equally be the rear sensor - I understand there are only 2 - one front and back.

Jax, thanks matey, funnily enough it coincides with swapping out snapped springs out for Eibachs.

Only minor niggle in the back of my mind is the fact that if you turn them on and off a few times, it does lift occasionally.

I know people who can have a look for me though, so thats good.

Cheers for the advice, very helpful - although it's more money than needs spending on this blummin' car!!!! :headbang:

Exact same scenario as me alex85 - dissapointed that the indie specialist didn't realsie first - though it was a couple of months later I noticed as I hadn't actually used the zed at night so no comeback. Hope you get it sorted.

Update - finally got round to getting the car into the garage. I laid it on with a spade about BMW telling me it is more than likely a snapped arm or other damage to the sensor resulting from the change of suspension that they did.

I await their call...
