Hi all.
No pics I'm afraid but the replacement was simple enough so I thought I'd share some info regarding replacement parts for this job that could/will save you quite a few quid.
My mirror had 'blown' and the liquid between the 2 bonded pieces of glass that make up the 'auto dim' mirror had started to displace and I risked it leaking/seeping out and dripping onto my dash/interior causing damage (thx to those on here who advised me to remove it asap).
Trying to source a replacement for an E85 Z4 proved to be quite expensive, upwards of £40 with the risk that it could 'blow' again. I believe they were modified after 2007 to prevent this known fault with these auto dim mirrors.
I can't remember the forum members name but he advised me to source a 1 series BMW E87 mirror as they were the same set up as the E85 with the only difference being that the central locking receiver mounted in the round sensor at the base of the mirror worked on a different frequency so it was a straight swap.
Basically, I unclipped the mirror casing and simply transferred my central locking circuit board to the 'new' 1 series mirror that I bought from Ebay for the lowly sum of £17.95. This process is easy, 4 screws holding the frame that hold the circuit board need removing which allows you access to the 2 screws that hold the board to this frame. Took me 20mins to remove my mirror and swap out the circuit board then refit the new mirror.
This is the mirror that I bought from ebay, missing the round cover at the base but I fitted mine and now have a fully operating rear view mirror that auto dims and doesn't affect my central locking after swapping over the circuit boards.
