Also the system connects to my TV via SCART, is there anyway to use the system on anything other than the TV?? for example if i wanted to plug it into my laptop/iphone/xbox?

If the connector is like that used on telephone lines, that is RJ11. If it's a bit wider like those used on ethernet cables it's RJ45. Not sure what the deal is with that last one with different numbers of pins, one of the first 2 will work depending on what size you actually need. I'm pretty sure you need a dedicated crimping tool to attach these to cable.

What else you can use this for depends entirely on what sort of inputs and outputs are provided. There's usually RCA type audio connectors so you could use a stereo mini plug to RCA adapter cable to connect your laptop to one of the RCA inputs or outputs, depending what you're trying to do with your laptop related to audio. Sending video from your laptop is more complicated, it depends also what sort of video capabilities your laptop has. If all else fails, a VGA connection is often possible.

I had a similar system at one point, the power supply was in the sub speaker and there was a custom lead to connect it to the DVD player. Make and model would be useful as would pic of socket on both DVD unit and speaker.
