Audio / phone connection

Don't mean to appear as thick as a pig, but in basic terms how can I connect my iPhone to my car audio to replay music and ideally use the phone hands free too.
What do i need, where to I plug it in etc.
I'm not interested in a parrot or anything that gets attached to my dash, would prefer to operate it through the standard dash screen.
I did buy the bmw cradle and back box but the connecting cable required a significant car strip out to connect the cable & the dealer wanted £1k for the job.
I'm sure this has been discussed loads of times but I'm no techy expert and could do with a hand.
Thanks in advance.

Auxiliary cable fit for music play from your iPhone - lots on here on how to do it (and have just done it myself - 30 min job). As for the phone fit - more complicated in terms of fit and equipment required.

Thanks alanj. Are you able to point me to the thread that helped you out? There's loads on the forum and most threads assume you have some knowledge to start with. Thanks 8)

Andy,

Follow the link on 'Youtube' below:

Obviously and American version but the same in terms of centre panel and radio removal etc. There are 4 'sections' to the video just follow them all. Removing the centre vent panel is fiddly and just takes patience. I used old credit type cards to ease the vent out so as not to make the trim although a trim removal tool as shown in the video would have been easier. The radio is a tight fit so when the screws have been removed it needs gently pulling from the back and will come out. Best to place coverings over the centre console and gear lever to ensure the radio when out doesn't damage any trim. Also place a duster or similar over the lower lip of the centre console where the radio has come out as this edge could be easily damaged as you work etc. Hope this helps.

PS The Auxiliary cable only allows you to play music from your iPd etc but no control over the playing from the MFSW or radio itself. Suits me as I just set up a playlist and let it run through.
