Still not sure this is the right place for a diesel, will be interesting to see if BMW follow

Why not a diesel? There are diesel 1 series coupes/convertibles, 3 series coupes/convertibles and even 6 series coupes/convertibles, CLKs come in diesel, the new VW Scirocco will have diesel and also the Alfa Romeo Brera and GT have some good diesel engines. Audi will also make a 6.0lt twin turbo diesel engined R8.

Diesel cars allready outsell petrol cars in Europe if i am not mistaken and are very popular in luxury coupes like the ones i mentioned and maybe others i cant think of right now. Bad points, they have a low redline (for purists..), "agricultural" soundtrack (although the new ones actualy sound quite good and only betray their fuel when started from cold) and are "dirtier" than petrol (new ones are much better regarding that too). But they have many benefits, excellent torque in the midrange, good ones are very very quick on country lanes, have great fuel economy and can easily chipped to give even more performance. The point is, diesel is here to stay.

I mean take the 123d coupe. It has a high tech 2.0lt twin turbo diesel with 204bhp (more than 100bhp per liter in a diesel!) and 295lb ft of torque which is the same as the 135i! 0-60 in 7 secs and 54mpg! So far it's had glowing reviews so i dont see why a (good) diesel engine would be bad in a sporty car. Also i recently i heard rumours that Audi is making a 2.0lt diesel motor to rival the 123d's and that's heading in the TT soon.

Now after all this, would i buy a diesel coupe? Ermm.. no, no i wouldnt. I like my sweet sounding petrol motors too much to give them up. But i really really want economical sports cars to be succesful! They'll offset my gas-guzzler...

First reviews of the TDi TT here and here.

Audi are diluting the TT brand a lot though, they're also bring out a 1.8T as well. The TT TDi will soon be on company car lists everywhere, a bit like the 2.0 Z4 is/was.

I don't especially mind diesel engines, but the problem with most of them is that they are dead below 1800rpm, explosive between 1800-3600 and then the power tails off drastically above that. The performance is also usually blunted by exceptionally long gearing, so although they have a lot of torque at the crank, the torque at the wheels is usually little different to equivalent petrol models.

At least the TT is 4WD.

Dont get me wrong I love diesel cars having two BMW 320d's before a saloon and a M Sport Coupe, and plan on buying another BMW 3series diesel when I stop using the Z4 as a DD

It's the noise with the roof down that would be my issue

Ah yes forgot about that, yep that engine will slot into the coupe far more successfully than the roadster.

I thought diesels were getting more unpopular because the saving in fuel costs is getting outweighed by the increase in diesel costs compared to petrol, and the higher servicing costs?

Is this not right?

They hate them now as they have a new bandwagon to jump on ... the particle bandwagon. Even with a particle filter, they claim it is bad for the environment.

Hence that a 3.0sd in Europe is almost twice the price of the 3.0si, even though the sd has the lowest CO2. CO2 values are so yesterday as per environmentalists ...
