Audi hits post, council replace post. RANT!

Last week as I walked back from the pub some poor chap had driven in to a post on the traffic calming chicane the county council had put in a few years ago.
Slightly squiffy I let out a large giggle and then realised the young chap who's car it was, was standing there so I apologised for laughing and quickly took my
phone out of my pocket and took a picture which also must have been very annoying for the young lad. :Dphoto-9_zps64004b91.jpg
Fast forward less then a week and the county council have got two men there replacing all the posts as this has happened before because there are no warning signs and the posts are very dark with just one small reflector on each post. Yet round the corner there is a massive pot hole that has been there for 2 month getting bigger and bigger. It's at least 4 inches deep and well over a foot in diameter and stones are been thrown up from it. Do they as hell do anything about it.

It seems that there is unlimited money for pointless speed bumps, or cushions as they are called now and traffic "calming" measures when there is no money or people to go and fix the holes in the road that ruin our cars and can injure and can even cause death if a tyre explodes after hitting a pot hole. If any one has driven in to Oxford on the London road recently
you'll know it is quite literally an assault course of which you have to weave round ditches and ruts in the road!! It's an absolute disgrace.

County councils should not be allowed to spend a penny on pointless road schemes until every road is completely smooth and pothole free. It should be law.
I'd love to point out to the workmen that there is a big pothole just round the corner that needs filling but it's not really their fault.
It's going to be much more fun sending an Email to the pen pushing, box ticking idiot at the county council and telling them how completely useless they are!!

Good rant there although I suspect the lads insurance will pay for the post, but only after the council have repaired it.

Totally agree though on the distribution of funds by councils.

Andi.

Does your council website have a Pothole reporting section? Ours does and I report every one I see, although they don't get sorted straight away.

If they aren't reported they won't fix them.

I wonder how many council employees, or at least the ones who deal with potholes, when driving to work and encounter a pothole, go ahead and report when they get to work?

The council will bill the lad who hit this. It's their standard practice to bill drivers for any damage caused If the lad claimed his insurance the council wi bill them otherwise they will bill him and it won't be cheap!

I believe if you hit a lamp post it's about 4.5/5k bill

Yes they do and that particular pothole has been reported already.
As or the London road it has been an issue for ever and they just refuse to mend it.

Dig up the post and use it to fill in the pot hole. Hopefuly the Councill will get the message.

There were some traffic calming obstacles in my neck o the woods and they were always being hit! Loads of complaints, i.e. stupid location, no reflectors etc.

They were only removed after a Police car (allegedly) mounted one of them!

Could be the traffic calming measures are there to stop said Audi boy racers. Looks like it's worked :)

As said have a look on the Councils website and report any pot holes.

There's no point having a pop at Councils, they have little money for anything and will have a specific budget for pot holes.

Unless its our County Council - They are belly aching about being skint, yet they are to spend £32.2 million on an unnecessary road - allegedly to attract investment! :headbang:

The reason they have no money is because they waist money on stupid road schemes that nobody wants. And as I said the pothole has been reported. You seem to have the typical middle class attitude that you can't complain when something is terrible. Were you a council worker or trade union representative by any chance? They also probably pay their chief exec a grand a day!! You really think you can't complain? You must have a bloody good pension to think the way you do!!

What are you actually complaining about? the terrible pothole or the traffic calming measures? If you have reported the pothole then it will join the queue of all the other 10 million potholes that probably exist in your area and will be dealt with in due course. Remember it's all down to Central Government cutting LA budgets and them having to juggle the little resources they have whether its on your pot holes, social services, schools, new roads, care homes and so on.

Regarding traffic calming measures, they are not put there to p*ss you off but for a safety reason. Unfortunately most drivers these days don't know the meaning of driving sensibly so Local Authorities have to take measures they think will reduce accidents etc going by the statistics for that particular area, so just maybe at that spot someone was killed by a speeding Audi driver!!. I don't like speed humps etc etc either but appreciate they exist for a reason so say to myself chill out theres worse things in life.

.......and yes I work for a LA, upper class as I know how to spell waste :poke: :)

Lol pot holes in Suffolk seem to be getting worse by the day, think I'm playing dodgems most days :D

Tim, I think the point that is being made is that some traffic calming and road schemes are ill thought out to the point of stupidity.
Local authorities seem to forget that it's public money they are wasting.

Oh and I own a A4 Quattro.

I'm glad you picked me up on using the wrong kind of waste because that's all you can put me right on and as being an LA worker (I use worker in the loosest sense of the word) you probably are an expert in how to waste vast sums of money. How did I guess you worked for your local authority? Was it your petty mindedness or your inability to hear any criticism of any LA or perhaps that the only people who think LA's do a good job and are value for money are the people who work for them? Probably all of the above.

And you could not be more wrong about traffic calming measures not there to piss you off. Let me give an example from an Email I got back from the LA explaining what this
traffic chicane is supposed to do.

"The feature is intended to be awkward and ambiguous for drivers to negotiate"

What right do these people have to inflict this kind of thing on us? None. They should be making our roads easy and clear to negotiate so people don't hit bollards placed in the middle of road.
