Audi A5 Coupe diesel or petrol?

Daughter looking to buy her first car and likes the look of the A5 Coupe - she doesn't feel safe in a small car.

She wants me to help her and initially I was looking at the 2.0 TDi diesel which seems to tick all the boxes. However, I am getting the feeling that modern diesels are just too complicated in just about every area, seem to command a premium, diesel fuel is more expensive and the Diesel Particulate Filter and EGR is a service item which costs around £2,000 to replace and seems to be a delicate piece of kit. They seem to be choking on their own exhausts. I cannot see the point of them as in the long run they will cost much more than a petrol equivalent.

Also, when discussing warranties, one dealer said that a max pay-out of £250 applied to the DPF, I guess that should speak volumes?

I have no empirical evidence for the above, just what I have picked up from the web. Does anyone have any evidence or direct experience with second hand modern diesels.

Anyone have any experience with the Audi A5 and which engine would you recommend for short distance town driving mainly?

Wow, lucky daughter for her first car!

I had a diesel Astra for 4 years, 10k ish miles per annum, had no service / maintenance issues (other than a crank shaft sensor), averaged 54mpg over my time with it.

Definitely worked out cheaper than a petrol equivalent for me

Ive had VAG diesel & petrol , you have already pinpointed the downfalls & by your own criteria of town driving i would avoid the diesel versions for all the reason's you already know
The Tfsi VAG engines are great , just make sure the belt is changed on time & decent oil every 10k .

Thanks for this. Hey, daughter is buying her own car, my first car was a £35 mini with no mot!

Mr Wilks, do you know anything about the TFSI engines? I thought they were chain driven, I see there is a 1.8 and 2.0 version which seems a bit odd, any idea which is the better of the two in terms of reliability etc?

Don't the TFSI engines have a chain Andy?

I have a friend with a 10 plate VRS and his chain jumped and destroyed the engine at 29k..

New engine has been plagued with misfires, coils changed and EGR changed..

Now it needs a manifold because the swirl flaps have bust or something.. I'm yet to check it, it's now on 51k..

Only had 1,8T & 2.0T Vag exp up to the chain driven era , they have sold 000s of 0000s so i guess there will be horror stories out there ? Guess you would buy the least miles on budget & listen out for chatter when cold & on warm tickover & more frequent oil changes than recommended would be my way forward
Some would say treat the chain as a service item but then whats the point of it ??

Insurance depends on age/occupation/location

Daughter is 24, a Dentist, living in Angus. haven't got a quote yet for an A5 but was quoted £630 for a Range Rover, which didn't seem too bad.

Chain belt wouldn't be a service item in my book, I agree.

My wife has a diesel Astra. On a 06 plate but has no DPF so low milage isn't an issue (4k pa), but her next car will probably have to be petrol for the reasons above related to low mileage.

We have a diesel TT the engine with the auto gearbox. And i am constantly amazed by how well it pulls how much power it has and how refined it is for a diesel.
We got the diesel because that's what the wife wanted. And they all came with quatro due to the torque that the diesel produces. Where as the petrol's didn't. Not sure if that's the same in the a5? The the quatro is a very nice thing to have.

I am surprised at the length of time and miles from service to service. And ours/hers!! (i have the 11 year old knackered z4 not the 1 year old brand new audi  )

Go drive them with your daughter what a nice bit of bonding. Would love to do this with my dad.

Cheers MM. Looking forward to it. UPDATE

the longitudinally mounted 'B8' 2.0 TFSI suffers chronic oil consumption of more than. Litre per 1,000 miles due to poor piston rings in engines from 2007 to 2012, Audi say this is normal? Class action against Audi in USA successful. No such luck in UK of course.

Maybe look at the A5 1.8 TFSI!

Are car manufacturers taking the piss out of us?

My friend has an A5 2.0 TFSI and even with her steady dual carriageway commute to work it rarely does 30mpg and she's an excellent, efficient driver. Thought it would be a bit better than that.

It actually went pop on Saturday with some issue with the fuel pump and had to be towed away to Audi in Guildford.
