Ashtray won't open fully.....

Hi all,

I've done a quick search and can't find a solution to this so thought I'd see if anyone can shed some light.

The ashtray has suddenly on started opening half way. I can't see anything that has dropped behind blocking it (have tried to get a small screwdriver in there and had a fish about!). I tend to keep some parking change in there so it may be that a coin has escaped but I can feel anything. I was wondering if there is an easy way to get the lid off or if anyone has any other thoughts? I can get the change out (one coin at a time...) but can't now use the 12v socket! grrr

Cheers in advance

A small coin will have jammed it, not sure how I fixed it when it happened to me, just kept trying and it worked free eventually.

Turn the car upside down and shake it :D

I'd just give the console some good bangs with a closed fist on the side to loosen up the change.

If that doesn't work then srhutch is the way to go. :)

I have use a butter knife on the backside and worked it back and forth till it opens once again. :)

My ashtray was like that when I bouught the car, there is a thread on it if you do a search. As already said it will be a coin stuck in the mechanism, I got a zip tie and poked it into the mechanism for about 20 mins then eventually it just popped open, you really have to persevere with this one though, you will be lucky if it just opens straight away. You can see the mechanism if u look through the gap, its just a cogged wheel, your coin will be jammed in the underside of that. You cannot access the mechanism any other way with the lid being closed because you cant get to the retaining screw under the ashtray itself.

Success!!

Thanks to all who replied. I tried picking the car up to turn it over but almost put my back out trying, so instead followed the rips above and used a tie wrap and lots of fidding then hey presto! The cause, as diagnosed, was an errant 1p!

Cheers for the advice, goes to show how useful the forum can be.
