Are E89 drivers less adventurous?

When the E85 came out, within weeks the first mods started. From exhausts to interior mods, satnav retrofits, audio changes and a whole load of other changes.

With the E89, I don't see anything happening at all. I have seen a roof module being fitted - that seems about it.

Are the E89 owners less inclined to change anything to their cars?

As much as I loved my old E85, my E89 is a massive change and it already has the toys. I struggle to find any sensible add ons.

I think you would be hard pushed to better some of the "standard" kit.

Now I stand back and wait to be shot to pieces.

Sure, but will you say that about the E89 in 8+ years time? I very much doubt it.

I would have said the E85 had all the toys when it was released in 2003 - but as tech moves on they look somewhat dated now

But I agree with PVR, not much on the modding from the E89 owners. I would be doing something with that bland rear bumper

i would mod mine but there is nothing i need to add to it..... my previous e85 went through quite a few different sets of alloys and i was tempted to change the sound system. my current e89 ticks all the boxes aside from performance maybe

There is very little in the way of aftermarket goodies to get excited about or purchase. As Stark said, once you've bought a stubby there's nothing else available :(

Also many are still under manufacturer warranty. as much as i'd like to chip mine i'm not too keen on BMW telling me to get stuffed if anything happens to the gearbox (DCT) or engine.

There are plenty of E89s out there without satnav for example, but not seen anyone retrofitting it. Must be quite straight forward though, nothing as complicated as on the E85 though.

Or something like a reversing camera, again something I would add if I had a car without it as it is just OEM add-on bits.

The first generation E89 also has the dim halo lights, again - with all the newer model having the bright LEDs I would have expected a few more to venture in that area.

I struggle to think what I would want to do to the car- and in eight years time I will be well into my pension I hope.

I might want a faster one !!!

If i had non M sport E89 i would change the front and rear bumpers as the M sport E89 looks so much better

Maybe they are still too new - what about springs, exhausts, ///M sport bumpers... Some people have done a mod or two though. I have seen carbon wrapped mirrors, roofs, some carbon skirts. Agree that they have delivered a more 'complete' package this time though.

Would love an Eisenmann exhaust system but doubt i will keep the car when it's out of warranty.

I think I did ok when I got the car as my toy! I think I would be pushing my luck with swmbo if I started to throw more cash at it.

Too new? I was working on the M within the first week :o

Buuuuut... You had an e85 before that didn't you ? And i guess even if you bought your ///M new (which I assume you did) then you'd have a fair idea of what you wanted to do to it, and could do to it. I have a pretty good idea of what I would do to an ///M if I got one.

PVR I think retrofitting Nav on an E89 would be harder than a E85.

The N52 engine fitted to early E89s also has little options available with regards to mods, and with all the additional electronics in the car another reason why people have done little.

From memory it's even hard to change your own rear brake pads due to the e brake.

I did my bumper....that's was the only thing I felt it needed.

This may shock a few...but if I keep the car, I may try and have the entire leather changed from design white to Cohiba brown....that's if I don't buy a new one

OEM parts are not as common second hand yet either perhaps ? I see a lot more e89 bumpers on eBay, but not many breaking for parts... And new OEM parts are shockingly expensive - lovely black replacement grab handles are £127... Each IIRC.
