Just got report from repair centre for partners iphone its going to cost her £147 to repair as water has been found inside. How the F*ck does water get in when its never been dropped, placed anywhere near water and always kept safe in partners bag. Phone being only 3mths old I was not impressed. Has anyone else had problems with these phones knowing they have not been misused?

Can I ask, did you send it to apple or to an approved Apple repair centre? Only reason I ask is a guy at work had the same issue, he had then his phone to O2, however O2 were not using an authorised apple repair centre so he argued the point with them over this and they replaced his phone as they couldn't prove the phone was like that when it went in and as it was a non approved centre it shouldn't have been sent there anyway.

A guy at work dropped his phone down the toilet within the first year and apple replaced it too which I was shocked by!

One of the guys at work had an issue like this a few years ago - with an android phone rather than an iPhone, might have been an HTC - seems that he'd been using it in the rain and that was enough to trip the internal water 'sensor' (I say sensor but I think it's just something like a piece of chemically treated paper that changes colour if it gets wet)

Yep as perry said. Almost imagine it like litmus paper. I have had this before ... Even using it whilst stood over the cooker/hob etc can trigger it according to the tech over the phone. So even if the failure is non related, presumably Amy signs of this and they can void the warranty. This was a blackberry years ago.

Yeah I heard this is a way of the manufacturer getting out of any faults. Even keeping the phone in trouser pocket on a hot day could trigger the indicator on older phones. Not sure if it has moved on in tech with Apple etc.

I'd persue it further as mentioned above - could be an attempt to get easy cash. When pushed further it may come more in your favour.

ive had 4, yes 4 replaced by apple after paying 600 quid for a new one at the start, each time given a refurb unit each one having its own weird fault, this latest one thinks its in dock mode for no reason, had nothing but trouble and honestly i have literally made mega fuss and got not 1 penny compensation..... the insult, when they told me, this only happens when the phone has seen water..... its NEVER been damaged or misused in anyway, i take care of my items... whether it be a top of the line watch or a cheap replica wallet. Very disappointed with apple tbh.... luckily my big apple item my mac book has never been a problem!

Take to Apple store genius bar only
The iPhone is not user and anyone else serviceable

Apple do not repair they exchange for an out of warranty service exchange unit ,factory refurbished ,like new but with reused parts (on inside)
They will not touch an iPhone that has been "tampered with in anyway
Carriers use 3rd party repairers and will reject on any excuse ,as do insurance companies .An Apple store will tell you to your face and you can if required discuss with them and escalate if neccessary
an iPhone 4 is £119 exchange over the counter and a 4S is £159 similar deal
Word is refurbs are better checked as each one is individually refurbished by a tech in same plant as new production

My 4s died on Friday night - error 29 :? - went into restore mode and wouldn't restore... Spent 4 hours in ?Bluewater waiting for and having a Genius appointment and then getting a replacement. They couldn't tell me what had gone wrong with the phone, just that it was an unspecified hardware fault. However because it was a fault code they don't see much they told me I had to wait an extra hour to get the replacement as they needed to check that there was nothing that had been tampered with. It was just over a month out of warranty, and it pissed me off mightily that they couldn't even tell me why it had died - so a failure of their product not my use - and yet I had to pay the £159, same as some dozy fecker who dropped it in their pint or let it fall out of their pocket.

Seriously piss poor tech from one perspective IMO, but what can you do ? Still in contract on the phone so shelling out £100s on a new piece of hardware wasn't going to happen. But the replacement looks brand new, and the backup / restore process put every single bit of data on the phone the way it was on my old one - didn't have to re-set a single setting, which is pretty bloody clever - Microsoft never seems to do that...

always take broken apple products to an apple store and no where else (if broken without any phsyical damage or water damage)

and I'd argue that iPhones are user repairable (fixed enough of them over the years)

Thanks for all the info /help. Went to Apple shop in Truro, nearest service in Plymouth. Positive outcome so far the chap had a look in every port and bingo NO water trigger been set off so he contacted service centre and we are taking it up with them asap, possible build fault. So as quoted ,O2 service check maybe on a wobbly stand if we get it sorted by Apple. Will keep updating as we move on. :)

My 4s has been soaked so many times I can't remember, dropped a huge amout of times, never had a case or screen protector on it, I work on boats, so it often goes flying off desks if it's rough and it's been brilliant.

Never smashed, never let me down (apart from battery)!

The only issue now is that the power button doesn't work. It's about 2.5 years old now am I don't want to get rid of it as it owes me nothing and I don't have to worry about dropping it.

The battery is bad now though. I'm currently on two charges a day, so may stick a new battery in it, or upgrade to a 5s which I'm sure won't be as reliable!

What was wrong with it to make you take it to the repair centre in the first place?

If it is only three months old surely it is under warranty?

It was a simple thing, it would not turn on after being charged .......... so back to the shop as you would.

You can get the likes of iPhones wet inside just by bringing them cold into a warm humid house.

Done it too many times with cameras. Stand them on the kitchen table for 10 mins and it's soaking wet.

I'm sure iPhone is just the same.
