Anyone with VW tech experience?

My runaround 2001 1.6 SE auto wont unlock via the remote. Central locking via key still works okay but you have to get in and turn ignition within 30secs otherwise alarm sounds. Battery fine in both main and spare keyfobs.
 
Did it ever unlock via remote? Not all VWs have that standard, I added that feature to the runabout Polo we have.

This does not sound like a VW standard alarm either. Is there a a keyfob to switch the alarm off?
 
Thanks PVR. Previous owner (from new) told me it did and it's a standard OEM looking VW keyfob with lock/unlock buttons. Told me the garage he'd taken it too before I bought it had thought it could possibly be the comfort control module (£300) but im looking at cheaper diagnosis first. Maybe the remote sensor?
 
Ok, so I assume no indicator flash either when you press the unlock. You sure that the battery is not just dead in the remote itself?
 
Indeed. No indicator flash when button press on fob. Red led lights up on both fobs when I press a button on it but going to replace the batteries for new ones anyway just in case. Could the garage have missed such a simple explanation do you think?!
 
The LED takes next to no current, to transmit takes a bit more. I don't know where the receiver is in a VW though as I made my own receiver (so at least it works from about 100 metres or so :) ).
 
Thanks again. I'll try the batteries first and report back. Reading into it the receiver is near the rear view mirror apparently. 100 metres is pretty spectacular :thumbsup:
 
Maybe you need to reinitialise the keys in some way, like you do ours..

or i guess some sort of code reading prog might throw up an error ?
 
I have the full code reader package for VW and there are no codes in that for this.

The keys are not rechargeable either, so if the car is 2001 and the battery is potentially 11 years old ...
 
You could try to sync the keys to the car, ...not sure how to do it, but it should be in the owners book....
 
My Polo runaround has similar problem. Second key will unlock car, but doesn't switch immobiliser off, so the car turns over when the key is turned, but won't fire up the engine. Effectively I only have one working key :(

There is a transponder in the key. I had the choice when fitting the central locking remote to use a new key, but I would have to move the transponder chip from the original one across, that triggers the immobiliser.

How are the keys resynced? Is it possible as a DIY job? I'm interested in doing it, as I'll get the Polo's 2nd key operational again :)
 
Still having issues with the remote central locking not working but managed to service the car on my mates lift this weekend. So very easy with one of these bad boys :thumbsup:
