Anyone with the DCT wish they'd gone manual?

Ok so I love the DCT, mega flexible, smooth etc... But I find myself wondering whether I'd prefer the manual.. Just to feel a bit more in touch with the car.. Ive not tested a 35i manual but wonder if anyone else feels a little disconnected by the DCT? (I'm from a manual e85 background, hence the wondering!)

Well I didn't test drive any Z4 E89, I just bought it because I liked the look of it....for me it's always been form over function...

Just COULD NOT imagine myself owning a non-manual sports car :driving: The pure driving pleasure...

Sorry Ferrari, but

i ain't got the E89, but i went for the automatic cos i'm lazy, i love it
You may have chosen an auto taz, which is weird for a sports car, but you still opted for the right car ( meaning the coupe) :fuelfire:

The DCT does appeal to me from a techie point of view, and I think it is an incredible bit of technology, but I suspect after a while I would get bored with it. The manual box in my 23i is really sweet to use.

Preferring the manual to the dct is like people preferring a manual typewriter to a PC or an SLR camera over a modern digital camera with a quality lens. :poke:

Nothing to add but a huge yawn. You managed to fit a roadster v coupe jibe into a totally unrelated thread. Well done! :headbang:

I used to have a E46 M3 SMG (which I guess is similar to the DCT) and it was great fun on the on the paddles but after time I missed having the clutch and the feel you get from it and soon found myself driving it like an auto (also the constant worry of it throwing up an smg warning light almost kept me awake at night) so it was sold and traded in for a 350z manual that was followed by a focus ST but I wanted to get back to BMW so now in E85 coupe ... I drive mainly country back roads as I live out in the sticks and dont do many miles so a manual will always be more fun... However if I lived in the city and did alot of city/motorway driving I would consider an smg or DCT as it would suit that driving style better than a manual... I suppose it's a horses for courses thing or just a matter of opinion ... Think I may have waffled on a bit

I prefer my digital SLR to a compact digital.
More feel, more flexibility, better quality

However, I would say that for most people all they need is a compact
(the auto)
I think the DCT is the equivalent of digital SLR, that can be convenient but
Have some manual flexibility (gearstick shifts AND paddle shifts) Just no clutch and the slightly alien push forward/back gear change rather than classic gearbox.

The manual is more like Analogue SLR... That I don't see the point of, other than cheaper and arguably more reliable since is mechanical rather than servo/electronic.

I gave up my analogue SLR ages ago, as soon as I could afford a digital SLR. My compact (ixus) didn't replace the analogue camera.
Just as continued buying manual until I got the DCT

I didn't know i was buying a sports car hehe, i just liked the looks of it, my motto is 'Like it - Buy it'

does only the iS have an LSD?

Id feel wierd trying to do a donut in an (DCT/SMG/slush) auto... :driving:

Test drove the DCT and hated it, every roundabout was a struggle as it was in the wrong gear no matter what I tried and was "dead" on leaving the roundabout in the wrong gear, even in "full" manual. Even full manual it overrides your choices.

Not for me ...

Can't figure that one out, I never have issues in manual mode"....???

I have my e89 and love the DCT, I have e85 auto and it's OK! THE GF. DRIVES IT I also have my manual box Z3 , it has a nice soft clutch and I love it too....i guess I'm a polygamist :D

Yes, I did write a review at the time when I took it for a test drive. It is pretty similar in behaviour to the Abarth gearbox which again is "fine" for daily driving, but not in the same league of involvement as my other manual boxes.
