Anyone recommend a machine polisher for a beginner?

Personally I'd wait and save up until you can afford one, rather than an el cheapo rotary that without skill can do a fair bit of damage.

Im Guessing this Is a general comment rather than at the rotary ive just bought? I completely agree about being careful But this one is some of the pros choice as a back up.

Just a reminder again DA is the way togo with machines. The Z4 has too many Sharpe edges to risk it.

Ok lads. Sod the wedding dress!

Just looked at my online current account balance. I can probably go £100-£120 tops all in.
So, with all the sharp line the Z4 has which is the best one?

Will buy tonight...

Kestrel DAS6, Porter Cable (Difficult to get on in the UK i think!) or Megs G220???? :driving:

Whats DA???

DA = Dual Action

Cant comment myself but Ive heard good things about the Kestral DA Ive got the Menzerna Polishes and Sonus Pads which I really like.

My advice is Ring Tim at clean your car and have a chat with him. Kestral or Megs g220 you cant go to wrong. Bear in mind you will need to do some reading up and practice before setting on your car.

Ps detailingworld.co.uk is where its at theres some good write ups and the search is great

Whatever you do, don't go to detailingworld ... you will start of reading and suddenly you are spending more and more ...

Offer to give your neighbours car a quick 'polish' Chance are they'll be non the wiser about any damage as you learn, love the look of it and thank you...

I practiced on my off road Jeep. It's lifted a lot, but standing on the wings made it easier to reach

Well guys i went and did it.

I bought some Menzerna polising/finishing pads and a Macallister Dual Action Sander.

All in i got the lot for £45....

The Macallister is very popular on detailing world

lol No the G220 and Kestral are very popular on DW.....

Just watch your pads mate... for some reason it eats them up!

Update: It's still eating pads

To me it seems that the base of the unit (where the pad velcros to) is cutting into the pad. By that I mean if you stick the pad to the unit, the slight overlap of the unit base past the velcro backing of the pad is digging into the foam. This cut is then working deeper into the pad throughout use, and seems to travel slowly under the velcro backing too. Since the pad and machine should be moving at the same rate however (they are stuck to each other), I cannot understand why this is happening i.e. where the 'cut' is coming from.

I did the roof today, and it's looking great, but the pad is ruined already! Maybe a slightly bigger pad with larger velcro attachment might help matters?

Good luck buddy.

I used the Porter Cable on saturday for about 6 hours to bring back the Polo to live. The difference is stunning (only done half the car in that time though !).

Saw that deal too........ Really is a great price! Now read up on how to use it.

My Z4 Correction might be of help too. http://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=107142
