Anyone fitted an LSD?

Hi All,

Curious to hear people’s experiences of fitting an LSD to an e86?

I don’t track my car, has anyone felt a significant difference for normal road use? If so what have people gone for?

Cheers,
Sef

I had a quaife diff fitted.
It doesn't make any real difference until you're in a grip limited situation, which isn't a regular thing considering how over-tyred the z4 rear is. It's exceptionally rare in dry conditions that an lsd would benefit you tangibly on the road. In the wet and or snow it's a hoot if you're happy to turn the tc off and skid about.

Unless you're fairly committed it's ultimately a lot of money for very little benefit if you don't track the car. Yes it makes a difference, for me I noticed a marginal difference on the road in improved predictability on/past the limit of grip but it's difficult to justify on the road where 95% of the time the dtc does nearly as good a job of limiting the old one wheel peel....

It was one of the first (and best) mods I did.
If you need it (as in: your driving style suits it), you probably already know it.
But indeed, if you're not the full throttle guy you dont need it.
And you're not buying it for the 95% of the situations, but for the 5% of the situations that the car struggles with grip, so the difficult grip situations.
DTC is no option as it's way to intrusive in the z4. But an LSD works very good in combitation with, because the point at witch DTC is activated is much later, as an LSD actually gives more grip and traction.

But mind you, its a mod that gives 0% streetcred. If you want something flashy, get something else.
You do this because it complements your driving style. So if you're a slow driver its a waste of money. And if you're a fast driver it's one of the best mods.

I have Quaife LSD on mine

Agree with GuidoK - LSD depends totally on driving style
When pushing on it improves the traction and predictability of the rear

You really require decent suspension to get any benefit from it though.
So invest in fresh bushings and dampers as an initial step.

On my previous Z4 3.0Si rear traction was a major issue. Rightrear would spin up all the time accelerating out of tight corners.
What made a major difference was switching from no-brand tires to good quality tires (I went with Michelin Supersport - but YMMV) and installing H&R anti-roll bars. I'd say that gets you 70% of the benefits of an LSD on tight corners with regards to traction.
